| Kowloon Walled City: A city with no laws or health/safety codes (New Images) (Posted on 1/28/13 at 12:56 am)
Here's Kowloon Walled City, the most densely populated city in the world. The city started as a Chinese military base, then was left abandoned for squatters to move in. It's in a neutral territory, therefore, there are no laws or regulations governing the land. Because of the lack of laws/regulations, the architecture of the city is fascinating. It's literally buildings built on top of buildings. Apparently, in the center of the city, it always appears to be dark outside because the dense architecture blocks out all of the sun. Anyways, enjoy this article that I found with a rare glimpse of life inside the city.

The city has been discussed here before, but those pictures are definitely new. Thanks for posting, I wonder what compelled people to stay there.

Cheap as dirt rent, lack of safety codes? That's actually in the article I linked. The picture with the meat marketers is captioned something like, "They moved here for the cheap rent and to get away from the governments imposing health and safety codes."

It makes sense for criminals and others seeking to avoid laws and regulation, but that doesn't account for rest of the civilian populace squatting on it.

Why would anyone live in bumfrick Louisiana, Mississippi, or Alabama? Why wouldn't every child run screaming from the poorer neighborhoods of America's great cities? It's where they were born. It's their home. It's what they know. It's not really a difficult concept.

Why do millions of people sneak into the USA? Because they want a better life. People who don't try to make a better life for themselves are losers.
