If River Phoenix was still alive I would have wanted him. Out of the living, I wanted Ryan Phillippe. He was a finalist for the role too.  Bale wouldn't have been bad but he doesn't really look like Luke or Leia.

Good choice. God damn you, Lucas. You picked a kid off a crummy Canadian soap-opera instead. Hayden had the look of Anakin but not the acting chops.

He was in Band of Brothers in 2001. Fassbender would have been an excellent Vader, able to play his Light good side with his dark power hungry nature. He should have been force choking people who defied him from the very start. That's what Vader should have been, not a whiny bitch who was duped into the Dark Side. Anakin should have gone over to the Dark Side through his own will, not been fooled into it.

Oh I agree. I had completely forgotten that he was in band of brothers.
I know Leo Dicaprio's name came up quite a bit when they first started casting the role. It would have been interesting to see what Leo could have done with that character.

I still get pissed watching the Episode 1 behind the scenes video where they show the two Anakin finalists and they pass up that one kid over Jake. What about young Anakin?
Edit: I did not want Leo back than because at that point he was always in heart-throb roles. Looking back now, I wish he got the job.

Either way the writing would have still been bad so the dialogue would still suck.

Ewan, Ian, and Liam made the dialogue tolerable. Portman, both Anakins, and Jackson did not.

I agreed with this is episode 1 but I thought all of it was unbearable by episode 3.

I don't know if you can say Fassbender when he was barely even on anybody's radar back then.
I mean if we're allowed to use hindsight, I would say Ryan Gosling.

frick Young Anakin. That was a huge mistake. What we learn in Episode One is entirely worthless on what happens in the later episodes. Start him off at 20 years old, probably as a smuggler who can use his force powers efficiently, with mind tricks and force chokes. His brother Owen, wants him to stop using the Force since it merely brings out the worst in him.
Obi Wan (who is somewhat an outcast in the Jedi Order and recently lost an apprentice) and Anakin become fast friends, and Obi Wan would agree to train him against the Jedi Order's approval. Obi Wan was far too much a stickler to the rules in the prequels, when he really should have been young, eager, and reckless. Anakin is edgy, light hearted, friendly, but extremely power hungry and half the reason he joins the Jedi Order is to increase his power. Add in clones and a minor victory against Darth Maul in the end, and that's what Episode I should have been.
