Bees? Anyone have bees?

My grandfather (rest his soul) used to have bees and get the honey. I've thought about getting doing some of this but wanted to see anyone have any? or any advice to someone wanting to get started?

Any idea if they would help a small time beginner out? I probably can get some equipment from my grandmother but really don't know much about them. I know awhile back there was a bee scarcity scare. Didn't know if their was some help with them.

I'm taking a class from UT in February. They have a class for beginners. I realize you are probably in LA, but I am sure the Ag school or the Ag department has some classes on bee keeping.
There are also all kinds of "bee keeping" groups up here. I am sure there are some down there too.

Really? I thought about just doing it for a little honey on my Cheerios or PB sandwich and to carry on gramps tradition.
