| Guitar tuning question (Posted on 1/25/13 at 10:03 pm)
When tuning a string a half step down and using a digital tuner, do I stop the line on the tuner between the "empty gauge" and the " half tank gauge"? (Gas gauge comparison). I was playing "Patience" by GnR today and had to tune down. It did the above mentioned and it sounded correct...I think.

does it say Eb on your tuner. That is half-step down. Do it to each string Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb

Your tuner should indicate flats or sharps, and that's what you should use. So to tune a half step down, you'd go from: EADGBE to (using sharps): D#-G#-C#-F#-A#-D#

Well, it did not say that last night when I tried to tune it a half step down. It sounded right for the song ("Patience" GandR). I will try again and report my results.

Legba, thank you for your help. I understood that but was having a hard time figuring it out. Spock, your post hit me like a ton of bricks. I just turned my tuner from "guitar" to "Chromatic" and found all of the sharps you listed. Strangely, the way I did it last night was almost correct. It was only slightly off. Thank you.
