So my wife signed us up for a groupon to have our air ducts cleaned, I just received a call from the guy telling me that there is a pretty good deal of mold above the master bedroom and our babies bedroom in the ducts. They said this was really bad, and offered to clean them with a chemical for $370, or replace the duct (which would be a lot more expensive). Is this legit or not?

BS, remove head from air duct, install exhaust vent in master bath and use it when showering, continue to exist.

I would at least go home and verify for myself before having them do work you aren't sure is necessary. Then, if it's really there, let them clean it. Probably should figure out why it's there at that point as well.

Just curious, do you pay to have your air filter replaced and trans flushed when you get an oil change? your answer will dictate my response on the matter

If there is mold up there it will be from condensation where the duct is not sealed and leaking cold air into a hot attic... How old is the home, ducts?

It is a hoax they use to make extra money. Get a second opinion.

per the BBB

quote:

Air Duct Cleaning Scams

Local ads offering a low price on air duct cleaning can seem like a great deal with minimal risk. While most companies are on the straight and narrow, Better Business Bureau warns consumers to beware of air duct cleaning businesses that employ bait and switch tactics or try to scare the homeowner into thinking they have a serious health-threatening mold problem.

Might be true but if it is there is a problem that needs fixing. It is cool in an attic at this time of year and insulated flex duct is cheap and won't take much for you to change out with some duct tape and big zip ties...

those are 50 yr old ducts. may actually have mold in there. replacing might be more efficent from an energy standpoint in the long run though.
