Difference between 3-4 ILB's and 4-3 MLB

What are the main differences that teams look for when staffing a 3-4 ILB and a 4-3 MLB?

I think it's more dependent on the type of 3-4. Like more of a Zone blitzing 3-4 or just a base. But I'm probably wrong

Since you only have 3 linemen (Nose and two tackles) the Nose needs to be big enough to take up two blockers.
Your rush linebacker is a tweener type linebacker/DE meaning he doesn't have to be 280 lbs like Cam Jordan or Will Smith.

Plus since you are always rushing a LB you can play more games and move him around.

Vilma should be perfectly capable of playing a 3-4 MLB. If not Hawthorne should be capable. If we keep Vilma, those 3 need to be on the field. then you put in your speed guy at the other side.

I think this speaks volumes of what they think of Jordan. This will also get Bunkley on the field way more. He was great on the few snaps he played

In a base 3-4 scheme, a ILB is typically slightly bigger. A 4-3 MLB like Vilma can be protected by two fat DTs. Not so in a 3-4.

You really want guys to be about 6'3" and 240 lbs.

No doubt. I think he's probably the biggest reason they felt comfortable enough to make the change. That and Galette/Wilson as rush OLBs as a close second.

I really wish the search function wasn't a piece of shite or I would have already bumped my "should we switch to 34" thread

Vilma is too small to really be an effective 3-4ILB in this day and age, Sam Mills not withstanding.

Brett if you go to your profile (not on the mobile version) you should be able to see a list of all the threads you've started

The 3-4 MLB has a lot of the same philosophy as 4-3 MLB but the main difference is you usually need 2 big guys who are good at taking on/shedding blockers and can still drop in coverage and rush passer. A lot of times the other 3-4 MLB known sometimes as the "Ted" takes on the blocks much like a fullback and then the "Mike" comes in for the tackle . If MLB's are too small then they could be susceptible to run. But then some teams just have a right MLB and a left MLB and doesn't matter the strong side and who is the "Mike" because they have same type personnel on each side. This also helps disguise blitzes since you don't know which OLB is the primary rusher.

3-4 inside backers have absolutely got to be able to shed blocks and play in a phone booth. It's why Vilma didn't play well at all when the jets put him there so many years ago..he's just not big enough.

In a 3-4, the inside backers generally have responsibilities from Guard to Guard, while in a 4-3 it's from Tackle to Tackle, or sometimes even more than that. Need more speed out of a 4-3 Mike because he's got to be able to roam around the field and go sideline to sideline.

He's not big or strong enough. He's a fantastic athlete but the holes in his game definitely fall into his responsibilities as an inside guy in a 3-4 D. He struggles shedding blocks, and playing in traffic.

When he can fly to the ball and get out in coverage, he's excellent, but when he's gotta deal with Guards or fullbacks coming at him he definitely struggles and always has. I think this change probably spells the end of him in New Orleans, which is a shame because he's one of my favorites.
