Nutria problem...recommendations??

Been on TD for awhile now but don't post a whole lot and first time posting on the Outdoor Board.
We live in a subdivision on a small lake. I have seen several nutria over the years but never had a real problem until now. Over the last few weeks been seeing them more often and they have started tearing up small spots in my backyard.
I would like to just shoot them but the houses are pretty close together and all I have are several .40cal pistols and a 12 gauge so not the best options. Don't want to freak out the neighbors
I thought of going the pellet gun route but don't think that is enough to take them out. Or is it?
Any other suggestions.

They're VERY easy to trap. Get a few foot traps and a baseball bat.

sell the tails for $20 a pop afterwards

While I agree they are very easy to trap, if you have pets around it could be a problem. ARs are very effective, but in the urban scenario I would borrow a 22 and use CB caps

Or notify the neighbors to keep their pets leashed for a few days until the nutria problem is under control.
I don't know if nutrias would be aggressive to dogs but if so that may be a motive for them to get on board with the pest eradication campaign.

I've had to super glue, staple and put down dogs that have got into it with nutria and that's when they have a running chance. Suckers slice them open like they are wielding a razor.

If it was $20 a tail i would have quit college by now

We have dogs as well as most of the neighbors. There's a lot of ducks in the lake as well, so don't want to mess with them either.
I probably gonna go with the pellet gun route first. Do they still make the .22 cal versions or just the.177's?

Well that should help him have some community support.

Its $5, and you have to be in the program. Just FYI.
