With AMC showing Braveheart the last few nights, it got me thinking about the best war movies. What's your top 5.

My top 5:

1. Saving Private Ryan
2. Braveheart
3. Band of Brothers
4. Black Hawk Down
5. 300

Braveheart

This is my favorite movie of all time, but I don't really consider it a war movie necessarily.

This also doesn't qualify as a "movie", but man I love this series. I have it on dvd and watch it at least once a year.

My favorite war movie is "We were soldiers". You can't beat Mel in those movies. The Patriot was another great war movie.

I like We Were Soldiers and The Patriot. Those would be 6 and 7 on my list.

I have to disagree. The whole movie has to do with the Scots fighting for their freedom. Braveheart has the some of the best fight scenes ever in a movie along with Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan is a really good movie.

Never seen Black Hawk Down.

Full Metal Jacket has to be in the conversation.

I agree with the other poster, Braveheart really doesn't fit the norm as a "war" movie, even though there are medieval war scenes. Great movie though, I just got it the other day on blu ray.

Lord of War.

Doesn't focus on combat as much as it does on the arms dealings. But overall, great movie and apparently very realistic to what goes on for arm dealers.

You're not American if you don't like this movie

Mel went completely off the reservation in that scene. The crazy was undeniable.

I'm American

The way they portrayed the british was just stupid. redcoats never senselessly executed people like emmerich has them do in the movie. and burning people in churches???

The music was dreadful as well

I forgot what poster said it on here months ago, but I'll try and paraphrase. "With the way the movie was going, I'm shocked that mel gibson didn't stab isaacs with an american flag and say 'America.'"

The Dirty Dozen
The Bridge Over the River Kwai

nope.

It's just not a well-made movie. Directed by one of the worst living filmmakers with disturbingly inaccurate history. Its like Emmerich (a German) tried to portray the British with Nazi characteristics.
