Where does the Pac 12 fall in all this super conference realignment talk?

If the SEC, Big 10, and Big 12 go to 16 teams each as expected, what does the Pac 12 do?

They are geographically constrained and the targets that are available in the region are not exactly appealing in various ways.

Do they finally have to swallow their pride and invite a religious school(BYU) despite a long standing tradition of not wanting anything to do with a religious backed institution?

Do they have to lower their academic standards and invite a school that isn't the strongest when it comes to the academic reputation of the institution(Boise State).

Do they take a chance on schools with strong basketball programs and could be sleeping giants in football if they got more resources(UNLV, New Mexico) as well as securing the Albuquerque and Las Vegas markets in their conference? New Mexico could benefit by recruiting Texas.

What about Wyoming? Strong academics with a good reputation, and the flagship university in its state. However, no recruiting inroads or TV market is delivered. But they do have a dedicated, yet small, fanbase and previous history of success.

A big wild card is Hawaii. It would be a big risk, but potentially has a big reward.

What will the Pac 12 do?

Sit at 12 or snatch teams from the Big 12. Going to 16 makes no sense if it does not expand revenue.

it serves them absolutely no purpose to expand only for the sake of expanding.

if they can't land a group of worthwhile schools (OU, Ok State, Texas, Texas Tech was one proposal) it makes no sense for them to split up their revenues into smaller pieces

UNLV's new stadium looks sweet. Hold the Pac 12 CCG at a neutral site, that being Las Vegas.

Sit tight for the time being. No reason to make any rushed decisions considering if they want schools like BSU and BYU is the future, they can get them with a phone call.

Why would the Big 12 schools leave if the conference gets teams like Florida State, Clemson, etc.?

They won't do shite because they can't do anything that would improve their position.

The Big 12 isn't going to die, so they aren't going to be able to collect the schools that are desirable (OU, Texas), and they don't add anything they already have by adding the western bore teams (Boise St, BYU, etc).

They're pretty much stuck at 12.

I'm with them here. They can afford to watch things play out a little bit because they don't need to reassert their conference solidarity like the Big 12, ACC, and Big East do.

And the biggest driver of expansion, the B1G, isn't about to step on any Pacific toes.

they should sell their soul, and take:

OU,Okie st,Texas ,Tech

And don't give me the granting of rights crap, when it comes to big12 teams, there are ways to get out of the max penalty. Programs put them in there, so they can escape, with less penalties.

But it seems that the Pac12 is happy with taking mediocre programs, and sitting on that.

I don't think that deal will ever be approved. When the deal included A&M it was worth the risk of taking two "lesser desired schools" (Tech and OK State) in exchange for the other three (two AAU members and a football powerhouse), as the PAC would have cut off any serious westward expansion of the SEC (the SEC maybe takes Tech and OK State, no way it takes Baylor).

But with the SEC having a foothold in Texas with A&M joining, Tech and OK State aren't that desirable when the real prizes are Texas and OU. Especially if the PAC can get Kansas instead (AAU member and basketball power). Even Iowa State brings more (another state and also AAU member) than Tech or OK State.

then i guess you don't know how the big 12 is set up with the granting of rights.

So only 30,000 people, max, attend? Keep it on campus as it is now. Vegas for me would be great, only a 4.5 hour drive, but I don't want it to be like the ACC's.

The only schools they can really target right now that would make sense (to varying degrees) are UNLV, Boise St, New Mexico, Hawaii, BYU, SMU, Houston, and Tulane.

However, all of those have enough negatives that its doubtful they are going to make a move unless 16 teams becomes the magic number with the SEC, Big 10, and Big 12.

They could probably just wait the 13 years or whatever it is to see if the Big 12 collapses. Hell, who knows if the GOA even lasts if the Big 12 add new schools? Its possible there are provisions that blow up their current deal if they gain any new schools.

The PAC 12 should add Hawaii, BYU, Boise St, Nevada.

Hawaii - You cant get more Pacific then Hawaii. If Hawaii were to get an invite to the PAC 12, maybe they could get some of the unreal talent leaving Hawaii and Samoa to stay and build a power program. There is something like 50+ players from Hawaii and American Samoa in the NFL and college. That's unreal!

BYU - Has a great fan base and natural rival for Utah.

Boise St - Brings you and emerging football power in a fast growing city of Boise. Expands the footprint.

Nevada - Solid football program. Nevada needs the most improvements to its overall facilities out of all of these schools, but it bridges the gap between Utah and California.

I'm a big fan of the Pac 12 adding Hawaii... I'm sure the Pac 12 would love that extra game, too.

the other three additions you listed, I just can't see.

If the Pac-12 gets Texas & 3 other schools from the Big-12, it won't matter. There wont be a Big12 anymore.

those schools would be able to sue the ever living shite out of them.

Just don't see the Big12 breaking up, only people wishing/predicting this will happen are A&M and Mizzou fans

One of these conferences is going to have to take "risky" schools. Not everyone is going to get who they want and I think that conference will be the PAC 12. I think the Big 12 is more secure then people believe and they are going to eventually get BYU and New Mexico first...maybe even Colorado St (who is investing a ton of money into new facilities). Colorado St is a wild card. I think the PAC 12 would do well if they added Hawaii, BYU, Boise ST and Nevada. All of those schools have unique fan bases minus Nevada.

why, is it written somwhere that they have to get to 16?

I'm not sure this idea of adding cable households for their networks will work as well long term as these conferences think.
