| Here Lies Lt. Wilson S. Newman... (Posted on 1/22/13 at 10:55 am)
Died Sept. 19, 1864 defending the sacred soil and the constitutional rights of his native state Virginia. "He was a courteous gentleman, a gallant Officer & Leader, Father and loving Husband" Found this pic on my phone from my last visit to Lexington, VA at the cemetery where Jackson is buried. (Yeah, I saw the lemons ) I found this inscription particularly moving.

You mean the patriots who took up arms to defend our blessed flag? Who helped to hold together a nation that went on to become arguably the greatest power the world has ever known. Who fought to preserve a nation that has largely been a force for good, and a world center of learning and innovation. You can't be serious.

Secession is legal, asshat. Lincoln's imprisonment of american citizens, and suspension of habeus corpus was not.

Those traitors didn't know this at the time, which means they were still traitors. The constitution was right, the north was wrong. The states rights died in that war.

He made war without a declaration of war, and indeed even before summoning Congress into special session. He countered Supreme Court opposition by affirming his own version of judicial review that placed the President as the final interpreter of the Constitution.

Keep telling yourself that, sport. I'm pretty sure the questions been settled--in more ways than one. Let me leave you with this, though. If it doesn't fill your heart with pride, you may want to consider taking your leave of these United States (I was sure to capitalize the U, in case you missed it). LINK

They won, so they were not traitors, but revolutionaries. And I celebrate their honor and bravery.

1) Work filters prevent youtube. 2) At the time of the Civil War it was not illegal as the ruling by Supreme Court came later in 1869 (after the war) that unilateral secession was unconstitutional. LINK Nowhere in the Constitution is secession by a State made illegal. Each of the Sovereign States originally acceded to the Constitution as individual States through individual State conventions (and not as a national whole) and could therefore secede from it thorough individual State conventions. "We the people" in the preamble refereed to the people of the individual States and NOT to the people of the nation as a whole. To confirm the truth of this one only need ask the question "Would any of the original 13 States have ratified the Constitution had there been a clause that definatively declared that the withdrawal of one State under any circumstnaces would have been violently opposed by the others?" 3) Lincoln declared secession illegal, but had no right as President. Policy is not the job of the President, per the constitution. 4) Congrats on capitalizing a proper noun. I'm glad grammar is helping you. 5) I didn't argue the merits of Lincoln's actions. Just stating that secession was legal, and what Lincoln did was not. Therefore secessionists were not breaking laws. But continue to let your emotions override facts.

Facts? If you antebellum romaticists ever dealt in facts on this particular piece of history, your entire worldview would crumble. I wouldn't want to be responsible for the psychiatric bills.

Instead of deflection, why don't you address the points brought up?

I'm giving you point by point facts of what happened. Easy to address one at a time. FWIW, i understand the necessity of what Lincoln did. On one hand, the abuse of power by Lincoln are grounds for impeachment, and he would be impeached nowadays if he abused power this much. However, Lincoln did realize the importance of keeping this country together. The cost of 600,000 lives is too great, IMO. But what happened, happened. And as a country, we are both better for it, and worse for it.
