I recently bought a go-devil hull and longtail (private party that was previously registered in LA) and i'm in the process of getting it registered with the LDWF. They require a bill of sale that includes a "sales price"
I'm wondering if i will have to pay taxes on the purchase?? I actually paid taxes on the trailer when i registered it, so i was wondering about the boat.

Yeah that's why I always buy the pushpole for $5000 and get the boat for $100. You don't register pushpoles.

I was of the opinion that the boat wasn't taxed. If it is, then i'd need to remove the value placed on the trailer (from the total sales price)........

Nope. Unfortunately, even if you buy it from a private seller in Louisiana, you still have to pay taxes.
However, if you bought it from out of state from a private seller, you don't pay taxes.
Sucks, but that's the way it is.
Ask the seller to write you a "lowball" bill of sale ($200 or something like that). DO NOT include the cost of the motor. It is NOT taxable since it's not the item being registered.
Have a separate bill of sale for the trailer and "lowball" that price also. You'll have to pay taxes on the trailer when you go to register it with the DMV... Also, you WILL need the trailer's title which needs to be signed by you and the seller in order to register it.
It's all a pain in the arse and another way "the man" fricks us but it's the way it is.

WHen the hell did this all start? Ive bought and sold 3 boats in the last three years and never paid taxes on anything but the trailer. Im pretty sure I would know, 2 of them were over 20k and listed that way.

My apologies. I was mis-informed and what I said is not correct. Taxes don't apply to used boats sold within the state by a private seller. However, it does still apply on the trailer.
