I had assumed because the middle car was a normal cheap car and an expensive one.

In the commentary it was explained that the middle car (I forgot what it was) represented a working mans car while the others were cars shunned by blue collar society.

I thought it was that the BMW and the Bug are objects people define themselves by.....
