My wife's dad has dementia and is on hospice.

He had tried to talk to my wife previously about his passing, final expenses and life insurance, but she did not want to talk about it.

Now as we get closer to this being a reality she realizes she does not know what she needs to know. Is there a database of insurance policy's or some other way to find out this information?

There are instant issue policies out there, but they'll be expensive and he'll have to survive for 2 years before they pay. If he dies before the 2 year period, they'll refund all the premiums paid, plus interest. I wrote a 77 year old man a $15,000 policy one time-no health questions, but it required that he survived for 2 years. He didn't though. His premium was about $165 per month and they made 3 or 4 payments. That's about the best you're going to find (unless somebody knows about something else). Good luck, if he has to answer any health questions, he's not getting insured. Look for some instant-issue policies online. Just read the small print.

Look in his checkbook and see who he wrote checks to.
check his credit card charges.
Look in old boxes.
Does he have a filing cabinet? There should be something filed.

Sorry, I thought you were asking about getting a new policy issued. You can check his bank account, like the previous poster said and see where his premiums are going. If he's got a permanent policy that's already paid in full, he probably has it in a safe, filing cabinet, etc. Those policies usually send yearly updates because most of them gain cash value over time. He might have those stashed somewhere.
