so for those who don't know, there is a big situation right now involving the girlfriend Mati Te'o's ex-girlfriend who was reported to have died last year. this was spun into a huge marketing campaign that was inspirational and basically got him enough hype to get to #2 in the heisman
well she's fake, and the question is how much is a hoax and how much is te'o straight up lying
HOW-EVA, an interesting story has emerged:
Reagan Maui'a, a professional football player, says he met her

Notre Dame admits the girl never existed
Manti Te'o admits the girl never existed
...but this guy comes in last night and says he met her before Manti Te'o?
remember, people are often idiots and their memory is shite. they fill in the gaps of their memory with what they want to believe. even short term memory is horrible.
A great experiment, especially when thinking about the eyewitness reports from Aurora
just because people are idiots and give shoddy reports of events doesn't mean that there is a conspiracy

One thing I can't figure out is this. Was the girl in the pictures in on the scam?
If so, did she "meet" any of them at any time and simply pretend? Just long enough to set the hook?
frick. This is the strangest damned story I've ever seen.
It was either a hoax Manti participated in and God knows, I can't come up with any reasonable explanation why he'd do that.
Or, Manti was fooled for THREE years and is a goddamned idiot.

his gay lover and he created a fake girlfriend
his family, who are major attention whores, pushed the story
it got out of hand

No. Deadspin found that girl. She never met / conversed with Teo, etc.
It was just a pic that was used from her Facebook (?) or some other online pic.

My ONLY reason is that it would have just been a kinda neat story that got him some sympathy / "praise"...but, then ND's season blew up and he became a Heisman candidate and the story got too big to contain.

Possible. But, while I certainly have had my heartstrings tugged at by stories about other TD posters going through tough stuff / dying....it has NEVER affected me like it would if it happened to someone actually in my life.
There are too many questions for me to simply pass it off as his being a simple guy that was duped.

Or to look at the flip side, of not just being idiots or shoddy memory, could it be that this is showing how people can lie and perpetuate a false story?

well i made the thread mainly about the FB claiming he met a girl (that everyone involves admits isn't real)
but yes, te'o's role shows people will soak up media attention if given the shot, and people who do interviews after tragedies do this often

I still don't know what to believe with this.
ND hired a private investigator who looked into this for 2 or 3 weeks. Their AD was chocked up talking about Manti being duped.
At a minimum though, Manti is quite the dumbass.

they also refuse to release any results and gave it to the te'o family, who won't release it.

I have my own opinions on this that go way deeper than ND and this Te'o dude. Just has to do with my overall cynical view of CFB and sports in general.
I do have to wonder...
If T'eo went to a Sunbelt school, would anyone care? No.
Thus the reason why I won't expound on my other theory on this.

Really? You think it is TRAGIC that someone that is 22 years old and potentially a top 10 pick in the NFL draft (with the money that brings)is no longer that ridiculously trusting? How many of you would want your kid to graduate COLLEGE and be this naive and "trusting"?
I would submit that this is the only POSITIVE that comes from this story
