What is considered an elite season for a college football program?

Considering the current state of our program, compared to the rest of the nation, what is considered an elite season?
I think a top ten finish or a BCS bowl game appearance and/or victory should be considered an elite season.
Clearly only ten teams finish in the top ten. However, as we saw this year, with 10 spots for the BCS, several non top ten teams make them.
Therefore, after winning a national championship and conference championship. What makes for an elite season?

In this day and age getting to a NON BCS bowl means the fans are upset and the team doesn't feel like showing up for the bowl games. LSU fans are the worst. The worst thing that happened to LSU fans was winning the 2003 NC. They think they are SUPPOSED to WIN every game.

I dont think that's the case. It's more of the fans wanting to see their team come to every game ready to give their all every snap to win the game. Not a poorly executed effort or nights when the team doesnt show up to win and looks like theyre sleepwalking. It comes down to preparation, and preparation is a direct reflection of the head coach.
1-9-2012 wouldve been 1000x easier to stomach had the team tried.
So would the losses to Florida and Clemson this year.

Undefeated seasons are the only elite seasons. Period.
12-1 are great seasons.
10-3 are good seasons.
7.5 are average seasons.

SORRY the TEAM TRIED, But they were coached and prepared HORRIBLY. Miles was at TOTAL fault that night. And as for Clemson or FLA. I gotta put that Miles as well.The team was not ready for FLA. It wasn't that they didn't try.

Only if the margin of victory is at least 45 points with all opponents being shut out.

If you are 11-2 for three or more seasons you are an ELITE program. Its about how long you can do this. Bama has been unbeaten in only ONE of their NC run as of now. Are YOU saying what they have done is NOT elite????

I consider elite to be a group of teams outside of the two programs that are in the national championship game.
The definition of elite is a small group. However, what defines that group in college football is the question. Had we beat Clemson and finished in the top ten, I think we would have had an elite season.

one season does not make a program elite. a program is not elite one year, and not elite the following year.
It is a function of record,championships, recruiting, facilities, etc.

I don't think elite and season should even be used together. I think the word "elite" can only be used to described programs, and it has to trend over the course of 10 or so seasons.
To answer your question though, I think there is only one team a year that can have a truly "elite" season- the team that wins the NC. The bowl system is so fubar, it is difficult to make other generalizations.

Seems to me it is a finish at least in the top three.
However, seems like we can agree that finshing 14th in the nation, losing to Clemson in the Chicken Bowl, reflects something LESS than an elite finish.
