| Obama Asks Congress to Commission Violent Games Study (Posted on 1/16/13 at 2:32 pm)
To be headed up by the CDC. IGN As pointed out by the Washington Times, embedded in his suggestions to Congress is the requested allocation of $10 million to study violent media. However, it’s not as significant as it seems, with Times author Stephen Dinan noting that “President Obama’s pushback against gun violence focuses heavily on new firearms restrictions and on mental health, but video games and movies – two cultural issues that many Americans blame for violence – get little attention.” The requested money amounts to, in governmental terms, an incredibly paltry sum. The American government spends over $10 billion dollars per day. Nonetheless, should Congress vote to allocate $10 million to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the group will be able to undertake a study “investigating the relationship between video games, media images and violence.” But here’s the important part, according to Stephen Dinan: “…overall, the White House said that while limiting guns is the role of the government, controlling what Americans see in movies and games is best left to parents.” So we'll see. SS/DD it seems like.

I guess to see if there is an actual psychological affliction associated with playing too many violent games. How many of these studies do they need to do, honestly?

they're just looking for the code phrase that unlocks every gamer's inherent blood lust.

This whole witch hunt against guns and games is misguided. Neither one are responsible for what has happened. It's just sick individuals. The money, energy, time, and legislation would be much better spent towards helping mentally ill.

I'm guessing they're thinking that's us. Seriously, a lot of us are grown men who still play video games. There's nothing right about that.

It is all just to distract us from Obama's real agenda of destroying the US

Why? I see it as no different than any other hobby or form of entertainment. Plenty of people have hobbies that I find strange and pointless but I am not going to knock them for it.

Sarcasm, but I'm with you. Any hobby can be dangerous if you get consumed by it. My fiancee isn't a gamer in the slightest, but she knows it's a fun hobby for me. As long as it doesn't get in the way of family life, we're fine.

Crazy conspiracy aside, I do agree that this is all very misguided. Stout is right.

A paltry sum here, a paltry sum there. Surely these paltry sums won't add up into a not-so-paltry sum. Anyway, this study has been done and well-documented before. I guess we need bureaucrats to check the work of scientists, though.

Ive played video games since I was 5. I remember that moment in my early childhood days of when i ran around my neighborhood trying to jump on birds in turtle shells and breaking my hands trying to jump punch my parents' brick arch way in front of the house... The idea of hanging thier blame hat on the rack of a peice of $60 digital media while worse comes on basic cable is depressing. I grew up watching football, since I was 5 - maybe younger - and have played football games since they were on the original nintendo and never once became so torn between video game and reality that I ran out and tried to tackle someone to "relive the game experience"...but I guess thats a strawman.

I played Chivalry last night. I really had the urge to dress up in armor and have a sword fight this morning.

Good point, but let me play devil's advocate. You don't control a character on basic cable. There is the only difference--the sense that you are the character. I agree with you. I have been playing shooters and sports games since I was a kid. I don't own a gun and I have never felt the need to open fire on children or moviegoers.

Anyone who has the inclination to shoot up a bunch of people is not going to be pushed over the edge by a video game.

Even with the proliferation of digital games in our culture, people still create arbitrary categories for them. I play Angry Birds, so I'm a "casual gamer". But there's something wrong with those other gamers over there playing with pixelated doomsday weapons! Eventually, the media will become as ingrained and unquestioned as everything else that fills our free time. I would say that the people who don't understand "gamers" are the ones who lack a lucid connection to reality. Playing games is not a mysterious concept.

If a game were to ever push me over the edge to cause violence to someone, it wasn't becasue it was a shooter. It was because battletoads and the original ninja turtles were impossible as F*ckin hell and made me want to smash stuff from dying so damn much. So the simple fix? Make games easier and crazy people won't flip out from losing thier freaking mind on impossible games!!
