| Who is Vasquez's Biggest Competition for MIP? (Posted on 1/15/13 at 9:02 pm)
Jrue Holiday has to be up there, but they went from playoff team to well under .500 despite his taking over the team. Asik and Parsons from Houston? They've both been fantastic. Hell, what about Lopez? He's been phenomenal when given the minutes he never got in Phoenix. Who else could give him a run? If the Hornets continue winning a decent amount of games and he keeps performing the way he has, I'm not sure anyone has a better case.

He is getting national attention, and not just from latinas all over the country.

I worry that he won't get it because the national media / ESPN hates small market teams like the Hornets.

No. He's been pretty average on an NBA level.

Vasquez and Holiday are the two most improved, imo

I disagree with that, especially when considering MOP players. I don't think GV will be discriminated against because of the market. He's been great all year and now people have no choice but to recognize it with our recent success.

I hate to say it, but gravy being a minority will help his case.

Holiday is going to run away with it, although OJ Mayo and Klay Thompson are probably in the running too. Paul George, Asik, Kemba Walker will be there. Hell Anderson Varajeo was tearing it up in a big way before he got hurt. We're too small of a market, I doubt Vasquez even finishes top 5.

In the context of the NBA, I'm not really sure what this even means. I think Gravy deserves serious consideration for MOP irrespective of his ethnicity.

Well it'll be like: 1. Holiday 2. Mayo 3. George 4. K. Walker and maybe Vasquez would be around 5, although I could see like Asik or Vucevic or Parsons ahead of him too. edit: forgot about Steph Curry. He would be ahead of Vasquez too

I could see Holliday and George being competition but Mayo and Walker haven't improved as much as Vasquez and the Mavs and Bobcats are slumping while the Hornets are surging

18.8 pts, 9 asts, 4 rbds, 1.5 stls a game, up from like 13/4/3 last year. So yea, he's going to win it running away

Vasquez is the leader in the clubhouse now. Klay Thompson, Kemba Walker, and Paul George were all lottery picks. Their ascension is almost given in their 2nd/3rd years. They wont be in the running. I can see Holliday. He's playing well but a lot was also expected from him. The guy from out of nowhere will win it before the talented guy a lot of people expected to take the next step. Just my opiniion

You speak so confidently for someone with nothing to go on but personal opinion.

8.8 3.9 TO/G Both are having impressive seasons, but Greivis' numbers show a greater improvement over his career averages. Holiday has him in scoring and FG%, but Greivis has him in 3P%. To say that either of them is going to win it "running way" is special.

As an FYI, here's some analysis that I did when writing my Robin Lopez for MIP column a couple weeks back. Granted the data is only updated through the end of 2012, but it's sorted based on the biggest changes in PER from last season to this season. Point being that while Jrue is certainly up there, he is far from a runaway favorite for this award. Plenty of guys have a legitimate case; hell, Lopez's may even be better than Vasquez's. Greivis' last month has been fantastic, but it can be argued that Lopez has been more consistently good over the course of the season, especially when both Davis and Smith missed time with injuries. Players like Larry Sanders, Kemba Walker, and even Carmelo Anthony all have strong enough resumes to be considered for the award this year.

I think Lopez saw increased usage with the injuries for sure, but we can all see that his improvements go far beyond increased minutes. I pretty much brochamped for Vasquez for the first couple of months based on the fact that losing Gordon hurt him more than any other player (other than Gordon himself). It's coming to fruition now and his numbers are getting even better with another ball-handler and scorer to play off of.
