Good for him to keep up the good fight and try to keep science in the classroom. I'm hoping he will continue to make progress and others will notice. LINK

Teach the alternative! Alchemy or chemistry? Phrenology or neurology?

Why are some people so afraid of something they don't believe in? I learned about different religions in World History and somehow I still turned out an atheist.

You are clearly unfamiliar with the LSEA. Perhaps you'd be served by actually READING IT !

Odd phrasing, seems like a tremendous waste of time and effort to me.

There's a difference between being afraid of something and not wanting to have your time wasted with religious studies in a science class.

It was during the process to adopt a new life science textbook in 2010 that creationists barraged Louisiana's State Board of Education with complaints about the evidence-based science texts. Suddenly, it appeared that they were going to be successful in throwing out science textbooks. Sounds like it is the other way around, imo.

I read the whole article. Not sure what him going to Rice University and studying history has to do with anything but ok.

Did you even read the article? Jesus. I know it's not FoxNews.com or the Bible, but frick can't you Christian conservatives branch out just a little bit? Here .. I'll make the reading a little easier for you by posting it here:
quote:
Kopplin, who is studying history at Rice University, had good reason to be upset after the passing of the LSEA — an insidious piece of legislation that allows teachers to bring in their own supplemental materials when discussing politically controversial topics like evolution or climate change. Soon after the act was passed, some of his teachers began to not just supplement existing texts, but to rid the classroom of established science books altogether. It was during the process to adopt a new life science textbook in 2010 that creationists barraged Louisiana's State Board of Education with complaints about the evidence-based science texts. Suddenly, it appeared that they were going to be successful in throwing out science textbooks.

When did science get kicked out of the classroom? As far as I know, science is still taught.

I know. But what's the problem with offering an elective in different religious studies. I'll probably never adopt an established religious belief but I also am intrigued and generally curious about them. Why should anyone be denied an opporutnity to pursue these types of studies because another person finds it offensive? Sounds like making a mountain out of a mole hill.

You got a link to that? I must have went to one of those liberal catholic schools when I was a kid. ETA:

There's nothing wrong with doing that, and that has absolutely nothing to do with this article. There are teachers that were attempting to remove evolution from the curriculum and teaching creationism in science classes. Are you ok with that?
