Apple's entry level iPhone to have US made transparent plastic chassis

Apple's rumored entry-level iPhone reportedly may adopt plastic for its chassis instead of reinforced glass or unibody metal as in the company's standard iPhone models, to save cost, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. However, Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) declined to comment on its clients or orders when asked about the report.
The rumor in the supply chain is that the inexpensive iPhone chassis supplier will reportedly be a US-based electronic manufacturing service (EMS) provider.

It is great to see Apple trying to revive manufacturing in the US. However I don't see the point of an entry level phone. Isn't the iPhone 4 free on contract and the 4S $100? I guess this phone is more for people who want to buy the phone outright.

Maybe this will only be sold to pay as you go people?

This would be a great move. Google & LG underestimated the demand for people wanting to buy a phone 'off-contract'. The nexus 4 isn't the most attractive phone for me, but I definitely want one. It's a top tier phone for $300 and NO CONTRACT. I can pop a straightalk sim card in the phone and get unlimited talk, text, & data for $45/month with no contract. If straightalk pisses me off, I can switch to t-mobile or AT&T. I am not an iphone person (much prefer my S3), but I'd consider an iphone right now if I could buy a current model for a decent price without a contract.

I read this as the lowest rung of IPhones in the new generation will have this.
Not that they are introducing a seperate cheap line.

arent all iphones pretty much entry level when compared to the customization options available on android devices?

I didn't realize customization options were a hardware spec.
I give your trolling attempt 2/10.

This isn't designed for America.
Subsidized phones are not a popular method of offsetting handset costs for smartphones in the rest of the world, especially in a huge market like China. People will buy knockoff before they buy the real thing at the prices Apple typically charges.
This is probably Apple's answer to the fact that any POS $5 smartphone can run Android. They're going to produce a lower cost iOS powered unit that can be bought for little to nothing without or off-contract to so speak. They'll put iOS, their mapping software, and perhaps Siri in millions of people's hands and they'll control all the social/social mapping data.
But this is probably not really aimed towards the US. They know they can sell tons of their flagship phones at subsidized costs thanks to the major Wireless carriers. This is for overseas.
