LSU (9-4, 0-2) loses to #11 Florida (12-2, 2-0) in front of a season high 9,964 fans in the PMAC Saturday afternoon. The Tigers played the Gators tough in the first half with the score tied at 19 leading to the end of the half before Florida went on a 10-1 run to end the half up 29-20. Neither team shot the ball well in the first half and LSU was able to stay in it. In the second half, Florida's shots began to fall and LSU continued to miss. Here's a look at the PMAC relatively full.
Crowd
One of the major problems for the Tigers was rebounding. Florida was able to win rebounding by a margin of 53 to 34. With the way LSU was shooting they couldn't win the game after giving up 17 offensive rebounds. While LSU struggled in many areas, they also can come out of the game with a few positives. Florida came into the game forcing a ton of turnovers, but LSU was able to have their best game holding onto the ball with only 8 turnovers. After their 11 assist, 8 turnover performance, LSU now has a positive season assist to turnover ratio for the first time since game 3.
There were also positive individual performances. Andrew Del Piero led the team with a career high 33 minutes in the absence of Johnny O'Bryant, who was held out of the remainder of the game as a precaution after a fall. Del Piero also ended the game with 7 points and 5 rebounds. Even better, look how he did on the tip off:
ADP Tip
One of the most impressive performances of the game has to go to Anthony Hickey. He was able to score 15 points, 4 assists, 0 turnovers, 4 steals and a block. His 15 points came on only 12 shots and was 3 for 8 from 3 point range. Coleman had 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 23 minutes of action as well to lead the Tigers off the bench.
In the end, their second straight poor shooting performance and a poor rebounding game really hurt the Tigers. Couple that with the fact that Florida is the best team LSU will see all year, and it doesn't provide the result many Tiger fans were hoping for.

Wow...
Seems we used to have more passes that landed in the stands than we did assists.

PS - you still sticking with (8-10)in SEC play? That would be a nice accomplishment really. Need to get on a little run here...

For now, yes. I don't know why everyone is running scared because we lost to the best team in the conference and on the road against a middle of the packer.
A win @Auburn would have been very nice, but my mind hasn't been changed yet about the year. We still have a great shot at having a successful year (8-9 wins). I think we beat Auburn if it was at home and probably on a neutral court too. Florida is just tough, but I think we win both games next week and get some confidence.

While I always enjoy reading these, I have to dispute one point you made.

While we still did great in this area and kept it significantly lower than this average, I disagree with your characterization of Florida's defense. They are still an outstanding D, but not one that forces a lot of turnovers.
Regardless, thanks for continually churning these out! Always a refreshing read from what we usually see on the rant.

Will we press more once we get more quality depth? We look damn good when we do! That was fun to watch.

Florida normally plays at a much slower pace, meaning less possessions, meaning less chances to turn a team over.
If you look at their turnover %, they force turnovers on 23.3% of opponent possessions (51st in NCAA). At that rate, LSU should have had over 15 turnovers. 8 is significantly less than that. I think LSU did very well with the pressure Florida was putting on them.

Fair enough. I remembered seeing their total turnovers were pretty low, hence my surprise at the characterization. Didn't think to look into a turnover per possession stat though. Thanks! Solid info as always

For this year, it is never in the gameplan to go to the press. They use it as a means to comeback. That is probably mostly due to depth. I think once we have more depth Jones will use it against teams that struggle with pressure more often.
I don't think we willever be a 40 min/gm pressing team, but you are 100% correct that it is fun to watch.

I like to look at everything per possession because so many teams play at different paces. I think it really helps put things into the proper perspective.

Watched that a few times. ADP has like a 19" vertical... which for a 7'3" guy is pretty damn impressive!
If he can get another year in college (wasn't there some talk of petitioning the ncaa?), he could be quite the player next year.
This is a trip.

One of the main reasons I went and got a camera was so I could film ADP tip offs haha.

I thought Hickey played incredibly well. Very impressed with her effort, defense, and especially the 0 turnovers.

I think it was the most impressive performance from a Tiger this year. In a night where nothing was really going right, he was able to have an incredible game. The 4/0 ast/to was pretty amazing, and the 4 steals on a team that only averages 11 turnovers per game is truly impressive.

You're dead right. It is due to that. At the Tip-Off Club pre-game lunch Saturday, the coaches said they like to go to (and will go to) the press when they can, but it's all about player management.
The line-up that includes Hickey, Stringer, Carmouche, and either Coleman or Morgan are brilliant at the press. But it DOES expend a huge amount of energy. We don't have anyone on the bench that can duplicate what those guys can do.
Fans should realize that using our backcourt players on the press also exhausts them for further game play as well. It takes careful planning about when to run it. Especially against the big, strong, fast players in the SEC.
It is so much fun to watch though. Hopefully next year we'll have enough personnel to run it more often. I'd love to see 40 minutes of hell
BTW, Tiger Bball fans, if you have $300 to spare, join the Tip-off Club, you will get loads of information and access to the team not normally available. Check it out. LINK

Very nice crowd. Unfortunately, the blow-out loss will probably spell the end of "good crowds" for the year. (See after effects of UK loss last year).
While I'm not shocked that LSU is 0-2, I am a little surpised how lopsided both 2nd halfs' have been. Right now this team seems to be forcing some uncessary "bad" shots, and being just a second or two late in making the pass to set up the good shots. ADP has been a very pleasant suprise, while the disappearance of JOBIII has hurt big time.
Nevertheless, there's no reason to hit the panic button. LSU's got one road loss, and a home loss to arguably the best team in the league. There are no excuses this week however. USC and UGA are both 0-2 and not very good teams. If this team wants to compete in the SEC this year, they've got to win games like the next 2.

Too bad. The crowd was insane when LSU went into the press for the first few times and had a quick 7-0 run off 3 straight turnovers by florida.

Why do we never see coleman play the 3 in a line up with tuba and JOB3 when we face a team with flordia's size. Also with a lack of ball movement and penetration when a team goes zone against us we should automatically jump into the zone press if some key players are not in foul trouble at the time. No one penetrates the zone, all we do is make a couple of passes around the peremiter and jack up a shot.
