Anyone else play this? I am a fan of long-term strategy games, and this really scratches the itch.

I played it a bit after picking it up on Steam Sale. There is a pretty cool A Song of Ice and Fire mod that I downloaded.
I can't figure out if I'm just terrible at the game or if my inability to succeed is due to my constant attempts to take the Iron Throne as Wyman Manderly.

I got it in a steam package sale and goodness, it is definitely difficult. That said, I ignored the tutorial and just jumped into the game.

It becomes significantly easier once you realize all of the game mechanics.
In my current game, I started off as the Duke of Connacht (one county in Ireland), and was able to become King of Ireland, as well as having holdings in Scotland, before my ruler kicked the bucket.

yeah, playing in Ireland is easy mode.
I finally completed my King of Croatia campaign the other day. You want difficult...The Byzantine Emperor has a claim on all your land and innately hates you for being Catholic. The Dukes in the HRE are constantly forging claims on you. To make matters worse, in my game Hungary also became a super power absorbing Poland and a good chunk of Cumania.
What I did: Took Venice, Naploli and Capua, Ferrara etc and started an alliance with the HRE.
25 years in, the Byzantines attacked me (but luckily only pressed claims on one of my counties and not my entire kingdom). The HRE did not respond so I was meeting 40,000 troops with about 3,000.
Long story short: I groomed one of my heirs to be a killing machine with 30 intrigue. Married him to the highest intrigue woman I could and then combined with a 21 intrigue spymaster got over a 60 in state intrigue. I then assassinated all the Byzantine emperors heirs and then the Byzantine emperor and watched as all hell broke loose as a 3 year old girl took the throne. The dukes successfully claimed independence from the empire and I was able to gobble them up one by one as they were no longer a superpower.
If I thought that one was hard, my current game is the Kingdom of Abyssinia which is that Christian Heretic nation in Ethiopia surrounded by the Shia Caliphate and the Seljuk Sultanate. 60,000 enemy troops on my doorstep if...no when they ever plan to attack me.
