Have the Academy Awards gone the way of the Grammys and turned into a joke?

All it is now is a "who knows who" and popularity contest... not actually about giving recognition to people who give their heart and soul into their work! The fact that they black list directors like Tarantino and Affleck but give ANYTHING done by Spielberg high praise proves this. Don't get me started on how Looper (easily better than Lincoln) was completely shunned of ANY awards and the "Year of JGL" didn't get him a single fricking nomination.

Not as bad as the Grammys, but generally yes. Too many examples to pick at, but does anyone actually think Sandra Bullock in the Blind Side was an Oscar worthy performance? Come the frick on

I don't know about all of that, but I was just talking with someone how they've become mainstream.
Half the time, the nominees for the major awards (best picture, actor, actress) were for less mainstream movies and films I really hadn't heard a lot about.

Sorry if I think JGL's work in Looper or the TDR should have gotten him at least one nomination.

it could have been on lifetime, great movie but acting wasn't anything crazy.

In Sandra Bullock's defense, the category was very week that year. Lead Actress and Supporting Actress rarely have any eye-popping performances.

I would have given it to the girl in Precious in a heartbeat over Bullock. Bullock was fine, but that was an easy arse role that several dozen women in Hollywood (and cable) could have done

These JGL fans are in denial. He's a solid actor but, with the possible exceptions of 50/50 and 500 Days of Summer, I have yet to see any award worthy performances out of him.

You take this stuff too seriously.
I learned early on that it was all crap.
--Chariots of Fire over Raiders of the Lost Ark?
--Shakespeare in Love over any other nominee that year?
--It was widely known and understood that Jack Palance (City Slickers) won his Oscar for his body of work because it was not a very attractive
field of nominees that year.
--Tom Hanks probably could have won for Apollo 13, but having won the previous two Best Actor Oscars, he was not even nominated.

I completely agree. I actually really like most of the movies he is in, but he isn't award worthy yet.

You're arguing they have become mainstrean and like the Grammy's yet they snubbed two of the biggest mainstream actors out there in Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Affleck while both were worthy of nominations. Also your boy JGL is extremely mainstream because with the exception of maybe a couple films, the rest of his movies have been crap like Premium Rush and small supporting roles in big budget summer blockbusters.
JGL did receive a nomination for favorite actor at the People's choice awards last night though alongside the likes of Channing Tatum and Adam Sandler.

Considering how much money is spent by various studios to campaign for their films to be nominated/win ($250k+), I'd say the oscars have been a joke for quite some time.
