Any Experience Duck Hunting at Big Branch WMA in Lacombe?

Maybe I suck at searching but I did not find anything on Big Branch when doing so...
Short Story:
1.) First year duck hunting
2.) Been to Big Branch 6 times... zero ducks to claim
3.) I will see some (two or three teal) every 45 minutes but that is it
4.) I hear shots going off (sounds like cannons) towards the trees and further east so there must be ducks somewhere
Long Story:
So this is my first season duck hunting. I am very excited about it and enjoy being apart of what Louisiana has to offer. I go with my buddy who is also going for his first season but is just as pumped up. We have done a lot of research and try our best to apply what we read to what we do in the marsh. Unfortunately, between the two of us, we have one teal to claim so far. We will see something every 45 minutes or so but when we do, it is as if the ducks are in their GPS Mode and nothing is stopping them from flying on about their way. We are not doing anything crazy... we have some decoys set up, not making many calls if any, very well hidden, etc... We have tried different ponds that are within reach of Lake Road, so far. Pretty much been limited to that area due to a little tiger being born recently.
I guess my question to those that have been out there... Are we just in the wrong spot? Are the ducks just not staying around here?
I am very appreciative of the privilege to go out and enjoy what we have around us. I look at it as getting a duck is just a plus. But for selfish reasons, I would like to not make it 0 for 7 the next time I go.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

The ducks are there, well first split at least. It tough, some days its hot others its dead. Very tough hunting, the marsh is a bitch. You can have some good hunts, keep on trucking, prob give it a rest though, haven't been many ducks since 2nd split opened up.

Yeah, opening day on the first split was crazy! Heard shots all over the place. I kind of held back because I didn't want to do anything wrong on the first day.

Thanks, dude. Would you say they have been closer to the tree line, east of Lake Road, or is that just my imagination?

Trust me its not worth the 1 1/2 drive

Its really not that big of an area so you will ppl on you where ever you go. Its really tough, one day the birds want a pond bad, the next they are no where in site from that pond. I try and stay close to the trees to avoid the divers.

Yeah, I see a bunch of them in the ponds but I am not going to shoot a duck just to shoot it.
I just didn't know if it was just me or if it was just a hit or miss area in general. Seems you've pretty much answered my questions though. I appreciate the help.

No problem, you should be able to get some teal, the scaup make decent target practice.

Next year before opening split, do yourself a favor and go learn biloxi wma. 45,000 acres and generally holds a lot of birds if you are willing to put in time and learn it. Also, very low pressure.

Yea he is correct, a boat is needed though, at least I think.

Yes you have to have a boat but its accessible with an outboard motor.

My lil bro has hunted it and says good things about it.

Its really a good wma. You can hunt interior for teal and grays and then go out towards the lake for canvasbacks and redheads. Andit's so big that if you are willing to put in the time you can always get away from the crowd. No birds this year from the storm but in general its good.

Awesome. Will do! I appreciate the heads up.

I hunt biloxi. Its a good wma but my boat ride to my hole is an hour. I ran over 35 miles first hunt out there.
I feel confident about killing ducks there though on a consistent basis
