I've been saying all along that there are too many red-state/rural-state Democrats in the Senate (16 by my count) for a major gun control bill to get pass the Senate, much less the Republican-controlled House and here's a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Just like our Mary Landrieu, they all know it would be tantamount to conceding their next election to vote for such a thing.

I think you're right.
Plus the liberal wing of the party doesn't really care what the bill looks like. They just want to do something for show. There's really no good answer here. Prohibition has never solved any social problem. And there's no realistic way to make sure the guns that are out there are inaccessible to evil people.
If the Republicans were smart, they would use the gun issue to instigate a civil war between rural-state Democrats and big-city Democrats the same way Democrats use certain social issues to instigate civil war among Rockefeller Republicans and Christian fundamentalist Republicans.

Gonna have the opposite effect. North Dakotans are the definition of "Bitter Clingers."

This issue is way too big to use for political gain.
