| In suburbs of Los Angeles, a cottage industry of birth tourism (Posted on 1/4/13 at 11:40 am)
Front page story in today's LA Times. Who knew???
quote:
USA Baby Care's website makes no attempt to hide why the company's clients travel to Southern California from China and Taiwan. It's to give birth to an American baby. "Congratulations! Arriving in the U.S. means you've already given your child a surefire ticket for winning the race," the site says in Chinese. "We guarantee that each baby can obtain a U.S. passport and related documents." That passport is just the beginning of a journey that will lead some of the children back to the United States to take advantage of free public schools and low-interest student loans, as the website notes. The whole family may eventually get in on the act, since parents may be able to piggyback on the child's citizenship and apply for a green card when the child turns 21. USA Baby Care is one of scores, possibly hundreds, of companies operating so-called maternity hotels tucked away in residential neighborhoods in the San Gabriel Valley, Orange County and other Southern California suburbs. Pregnant women from Chinese-speaking countries pay as much as $20,000 to stay in the facilities during the final months of pregnancy, then spend an additional month recuperating and awaiting the new baby's U.S. passport. Many of the hotels operate in violation of zoning laws, their locations known mainly to neighbors who observe the expectant mothers' frequent comings and goings.

Do you ever grow weary supposing yourself to be so superior to others? Does it take a toll on you emotionally to be so consistently condescending?

His reply actually made no sense whatsoever in regards to the context of the quoted article. I guess it's nothing to get in the way of ATL's wonderful superiority complex, though.

But that's not the reality. It's not either/or. It's both doing it right now.

Am I superior to you? You didn't actually make a point, so why do you feel targeted?

of course. I don't see why this loophole isn't closed. Add a year residency requirement to achieve it.

Did I mention myself? I said "others." Condescension is your default position.

Same here. This is economic suicide. People wonder why California is broke. Here's a good example.

I think the US should monetize citizenships like this, right now the US gov't little out of this. We should auction them off IMHO.

Every US citizen who isn't criminally beating the system IS paying by virtue of federal income taxes, state and local income taxes, sales tax, social security and medicaid taxes, property taxes, gasoline taxes, and where applicable, federal corporate taxes. What taxes do the families of birth tourism pay? Sales tax and gasoline tax. Yet, according to the article in the OP, the kids of birth tourism will be eligible for free public school education, low interest student loans (which are tax-payer subsidized), and all the other saftey nets funded by American tax payers. The problem isn't immigration. The problem is economics. Too few people paying in; too many people taking out. Everybody wants a piece of the pie. Most people have no clue how the pie got there in the first place.
