Well as I was listening to this they said one of the problems is the military discouraging people to seek help (mental) because its a sign of weakness.

That's just not true. For the past 5 years or so they have been trying to combat these higher rates by pushing for mental evaluations. I don't know the cause, but its not from a lack of resources. And the guys committing suicide aren't necessarily repeat deployers.
As I've said in the past one of my soldiers committed suicide while in a guard tower so this hits home for me. I never knew why he did it or what drove him to. He certainly wasn't a strong soldier, but its not something you saw in him. He was only 19. He hadn't seen anyone close to him shot. He had no girlfriend back home to cheat on him. His parents couldn't believe it either. It was very difficult talking to them when I returned because I had no answers.

I think its because our boys over there dont know what they are fighting for. I mean, they are in the middle of shit-hole nowhere for atleast half a year away from their families, looking for an enemy that doesnt wear a uniform, and all while constantly worrying if that object they are standing by is a piece of trash or a well hidden IED ready to end their lives without warning or cause...
Its really fricking ridiculous.

Yep, I've got one uncle with PTSD after being in Iraq and one family friend who committed suicide.

Could it have anything to do with the type of person that would join the military? I know there are some great people in there. But, where I grew up the craziest of the crazy joined. I mean the guys who would do anything when you were growing up.

That's unfortunate. Do you feel like his suicide was a direct result of his time served in the military?
Any issues from what you witnessed in combat? Or is it strictly anecdotal evidence?

Then whomever you were listening to was a fricking idiot who hasn't taken the time to research shite.
They beat the frick out of anti-suicide training in the military. It's a goddamned HUGE priority. Anyone saying the "military" discourages seeking help outs themselves as a dumb frick.

One of the leading stressors right now is that since 2009 the Army has been meeting recruiting and retention goals and has been able to separate individuals who are not up to standard ie overweight, don't get promoted, fail physical fitness tests. A lot of these guys have families and face a tough job market and very few marketable skills. Still the right thing to do though, the Army is there to fight wars not provide welfare to people not up to task.

One of my friends a senior NCO drove downtown at lunch time and jumped off a parking ramp, and you are correct DOD wide the push for mental health support has been a big deal the last 5 years or so.

I did the research several months back with a thread similar to yours. But, go look at the increased rate of suicide among Americans as a whole, and you will see that the increase in the rate of suicide among every day Americans is nearly identical to the increase in the rate of suicide among our military.
It is indeed sad, but it has nothing to do with war. America has an ever growing population that is willing to take it's life, both military and civilian. And, the numbers are growing at the same rate for both.
