| School Encourages Homophobic Humiliation as Student Punishment (Posted on 1/3/13 at 11:02 am)
quote:
An Arizona principal made two boys hold hands in the school courtyard to 'teach them a lesson.' Two Arizona high school students who were caught fighting faced a controversial punishment concocted by their principal: Either endure a suspension, or sit in the school courtyard holding hands while other students shout and throw homophobic slurs at you. The message here seems to be that there’s nothing more horrific than being perceived as gay. Student Brittney Smyers told ABC 15, "Kids were laughing at them and calling them names, asking, 'Are you gay?' ” Pictures of the boys holding hands surfaced online with some singing the principal’s praises, while others denounced his tactics as shortsighted and discriminatory.

Pretty pathetic. It's a real shame to recognize how many Americans do not understand scientific findings, such as the fact there is only a marginal 3% difference between the two biological sexes.

Considering the news outlet, I bet there is another side to this story.

The original story doesn't say anything about the school "encouraging homophobic humiliation", just that they hold hands in order to avoid suspension. Just because some students made some comments doesn't mean they were encouraged to do so by the principal. My 2 cents. Maybe there is more to the story.

Hopefully Morris Dees Seligman's team comes to the rescue.

Perhaps true, but the Principal should have stopped such behavior when it occurred, and the fact the other students engaged in this "homophobic behavior" pretty much overrides what ever lesson the Principal was trying to encourage. ie Holding hands is not the way to go, being masculine is.

this, and since when is holding hands homosexual? I do think the punishment was likely a bad move but the kids had a choice - suspension or this.

I have a hard time believing the principal made the other students shout slurs at them. But I think the idea of making them hold hands is awesome. You want to act like tough guys and disrupt class, hold hands for a while and see if you can't get along. People are so fricking sensitive.

I think it's well accepted among other cultures

Accepted as homosexual or accepted as normal? I've been in lots of cultures where females hold hands, I can't recall ever seeing heterosexual males holding hands (outside of perhaps sporting activities ie, start of a contest).

Men in India hold hands as a sign of friendship.

Well, it might be only 3%, but the whole penis/vagina thing is a pretty big fricking deal.

Looks like it worked too. Look how embarrassed they both look.

I have NO PROBLEM with this form of treatment at all. A little humiliation and embarassment can teach valuble lessons to many. It's a lot better than the hypervigilent PC bull shite. This will not scar them for life. The other kids teasing them and using slurs should be lined up right next to them.
