I want to be a "victim". Oh and by the way, $ 31,000 is what FEMA gives out automatically. Getting Part of the 60 billion would be sweet.

Being a victim is great, because you get money for it.

Not sure if you are infering that your "house" is worth less than $31,000 or if you are commenting on FEMA payments in general. If the latter, I agree. I have family who suffered significant damage to their NJ home from Sandy and received about $30,000 from FEMA. My take is that FEMA does not owe private landowners anything. If you want to live in a hazard zone (floods, fires, hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes) be sure to carry sufficient insurance. Otherwise, you should be prepared to cover the damage yourself. Why should US taxpayers encourage wreckless behavior and bail out folks who made poor decisions?

Every where. That's why individuals should save for a "rainy day" and state governments should have such money set aside for "rainy days." It was not nor should it be the job of the federal government to print money to hand out as it does, which most of it is wasted. The government didn't rebuild following Katrina. The rebuilding was done mostly by various churches and their denominations.

How much money did the federal government give to all the people affected by the Alabama tornado who suffered home damage or total loss? People may have received money. I have no clue. Who chooses when money is given out to people incurring losses from natural disasters? Same end result as a family losing their house in NJ. Why wouldn't I get money too? Would I see a check if lightning struck my house during a thunderstorm and burned it down? Hail damage on my car? Seriously, where is the line in the sand? What purpose is homeowners insurance in these instances? My wife has college loans to pay pack? Why don't the rest of America pay that back for me please. TIA

I think it is probably cheaper to just give out 31K than to actually have a bureaucracy to determine damages the government should cover, handle litigation that claims the claim process is racist, or inequitqble for other reasons, follow up and detect fraud, then prosecute. Lots of fricking work to administer a program, just give em the money.
