| Your significant others political leanings: aligned or not? (Posted on 1/1/13 at 10:49 pm)
This may be an OT'ish type discussion, but I think it's best reserved for here. How similar is your SO's political beliefs to your own? I would hope most would be aware of such leanings before getting married, so if you were dissimilar, how has this affected your relationship? Did this ever put a strain on things?

Currently single but my last 2 GFs differed from me politically (I'm strongly libertarian and they were super conservative). Political differences didn't doom the relationships but religious beliefs did (I'm atheist and they were both Catholics).

I'm a leftist and she's a liberal. I find her moderation a little annoying but I can deal.

I don't date liberals. End of discussion.

Yeah we both hate Democrats and Republicans. Gary Johnson 2016.

I am more Libertarian than my wife. She is GOP all the way. All in all, we do just fine.

Hard to answer. She frequently surprises me.

she hates politics and doesn't pay attention. But when she does, she gets pissed off. so I'll put her in the conservative camp.

I'd say she's conservative but not as much so as me. But, she really couldn't give two fricks.

Sounds like most people date or are married to those similar to their own political beliefs. I was hoping to get someone who was R but with a D wife or vice versa.

So if you were attracted to someone the first question you ask is about politics? I would think that if you fell in love with someone it wouldn't matter what their political beliefs are. I would think someone's religious beliefs would matter infinitely more than their political beliefs. I had no clue of what my wife's political beliefs were because I didn't take that into consideration when I was plotting to get in her pants. Once I did, It didn't matter.

Aligned. She's probably more conservative than I am about some things.

My SO hates politics first and foremost but we are both conservative fiscally, socially she is a little more moderate but leans to the right where I am conservative again. I will vote 3rd party way before she will though. Now my inlaws are what you were wanting, a strong r with a strong d. Not sure if it causes strain but we did have a bit of a heated discussion at new years dinner about current events. It was definitely a bit ackward for a few minutes.....

We are complete opposite, but neither one is die-hard to the point of blind allegiance. We hardly ever get into heated debates, and even if we do, we accept the fact that we are each champions of our respective beliefs. Each were formed by our own individual experiences, so there's really nothing that's going to change. I never ask her how she votes, nor her me.

When I met my wife 19 years ago she was totally disinterested in politics and never voted. She asked me why I was so interested. Her check stub had just come in the mail. I showed the numbers to her: "This is how much you earned. This is how much the govt is taking from you. This is how much they are allowing you to keep." Her response: "Holy F****** SH**!!!" She immediately became a right winger, keeps up with politics and votes every election.

my wife is liberal, I am libertarian. She likes some of the libertarian position, but finds them to be somewhat cold. I would say we agree on 50% of the issues. And we definitely agree that both republicans and democrats suck.

Me, Libertarian. Her...dyed in the wool liberal. Pretty frustrating knowing the she's fully complicit in the direction we are headed (financially speaking).
