I met a guy out shooting who was firing his very first rounds out of a Rock Island out of the box.
His Rock Island never missed a lick. He was drilling a 2" bull at 35 feet.
I didn't fire it, but he seemed really happy...said it felt just like his old service pistol.

Picked it up today. As soon as I told the guy at the FFL dealer I was picking up the TISAS he commented that he couldn't believe how good the fit/finish/tolerances were for a $399 gun. I'd have to agree. Hope to get out to the range soon. If this thing shoots as good as it looks, I'm going to be VERY happy.

I have an American Classic in Commander size. I've had an RIA, and I'd take the Classic with my hindsight.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. I've heard great things about RIAs (especially customer service).

Update on the TISAS:
Took it to the range this afternoon. Shot about 100 rounds. Only had one issue with premature slide lock on the 10th round. I switched mags and had no other issues the rest of the time. Pistol is more accurate than I am...I'm not experienced at all with handguns and was getting very tight groups at 10 yards and all headshots at 25 yards which is more than good enough for my purposes.
One other note: after I broke it down and cleaned and oiled everything up, I noticed a VERY slight amount of slide to frame play. Apparently this has little bearing on accuracy but just wanted to throw that out there.
Overall extremely happy with the pistol. Great quality for $400. Still all 5* reviews on Bud's (60+ last I checked), though they're unfortunately out of stock now.

Rock island had one go on sale for $300 around Christmas. It was a .45 and I regret not picking that up.

Where did you get that? That's a good price for a "known" brand 1911. And it's the color scheme I want.

Yeah if I got the rock island I'd still want a ruger or better.

I agree...Cheap doesn't always mean bad...
I had an AMT hardballer in the mid 80's given to me by my brother(a gunsmith)for my 18th birthday...he did some nice work to it(mostly fitting, machine work polishing and trigger work)...it shot real well in the few matches I participated in at St Bernard Indoor shooting center in Arabi back then...

For everybody, this might be a thread hijack but something I have been thinking about. Everybody talks about when they get a new CC pistol they want to shoot thousands of rounds through it to ensure that it is reliable. Well, most modern firearms are. I am under the mind set that I go to the range and shoot a few hundred rounds through mine and its good to go. I figure that a gun that is 99% reliable is better than no gun at all. Also, I go to the range at least once a month to practice and fine tune my already excellent shooting skills (joke). These range trips are adding a hundred rounds each time and further proving its reliability.
So basically, why are people such snobs when it comes to their CC gun? Or should I become said snob?
