I'm a lifelong Tiger fan who remembers LSU basketball from the Jackson-O'Neal years forward. It pains me to feel the need to make this point - which may have been discussed ad nauseum - but why is LSU, a top flight state university in the SEC, at such pains to recruit top quality basketball players and maintain a top quality basketball program? The football program reached the peak in 2003 and has managed to maintain its status for nearly a decade. Are we "one coach away"? Is Johnny Jones "that coach"?

I welcome theories.

Go check out the recruiting board and look at who Johnny has coming in next year and decide for yourself.

Have you been under a rock? Jones has been lighting it up on the recruiting trail.

You do realize we have the #6 class in the country next year?

You really should have looked into how we've recruited since Johnny's been here before making this post.

We went to the final four in 2006

Trent Johnson was not a good fit.

We have a top 5 recruiting class coming in next year.

yeah it sucks to have a top JUCO kid, a 5*, and 2 4* players committed

eta: and be in serious contention to sign another 5*

Class coming in in his first full year.

I've seen the recruiting board, I've judged the talent, and my question remains: Why is the LSU basketball program, with its history and resources, so consistently bad, when the football program is so consistently good?

Is your question why are we not Duke/Kansas? Because LSU has historically had a very good basketball program and made some good runs under Brady, even with all of the sanctions. Trent Johnson really fricking sucked. Johnny is bringing back the magic

I recall breathless talk of Derenbecker, Ludwig, Hamilton, White, and Dotson two seasons ago... that worked out very well.

My point is that the basketball program right now is the shite on the boot of the football program, and it doesn't have to be. When is this going to change? Real answers only please.

We have had great players, but only 3 final four
Appearances. We aren't exactly the Mecca for College
Basketball.
Jonny just needs to win consistently , fill the pmac,
Get the students back involved.
Then the ad needs to spend some money on advertising, promotions, lower the ticket prices until the product on the court matches the prices they are charging

In Trents first year in 2009, we won the SEC and beat Butler in the NCAA tourney...the next two years Butler made it all the way to the NCAA Championship game. The loss that year in the 2nd round was against North Carolina in Greensboro. It may as well have been a road game. I was there..maybe 200 LSU fans total.if Ty Lawson does not come off the bench and have a great 2nd half, we are on to the sweet 16. We gave UNC their best game in the tourney by far that season. Hurricane Katrina really hurt LSU basketball. we would have had D.J. Augustine at point (he went to texas). Losing Greg Monroe to Georgetown really hurt a lot.

Trent just did not run the style of play that a lot of kids like to play these days..run and fast break..so we didnt get a lot of really good athletes under him. Plus we lost Justin Hamilton to the NBA or we could have been really good this season. No one saw that coming. With Justin and Johnny and Shavon we would have had a really solid front line.

the incoming recruiting class will be the best one since we signed Shaq and Stanley Roberts and Mo Williamson and Harold Boudreaux and Randy Devall...Johnny will get it done...just be patient with him.

Posts like this, though I admire the poster's optimism, are idiotic. These are the same excuse filled "reasons" that LSU can't be as successful in basketball as it can be in football. "It may as well have been a road game. I was there ... If ... Hurricane Katrina really hurt LSU basketball ... we would have had D.J. Augustine ..." blah blah blah...

Why are there so many excuses for basketball and not for football?
