Teach a man to fish thread pinned at the top of Fark board... has a link to the place to get any font you want...
I like the ones that have the ole Miss transparent.. with what im guessing is the "grove" the one with the players.. too busy for me... but thats just me... the work itself and this is coming from a fellow rookie so take it for what its worth lol

Yeah I hear you out because even I somewhat thought it was too busy as well ... I guess I need to pay heed to the whole "less is more" logic ... But hey thanks

My thoughts:
You have way too much going on in all of these
Try not to make everything transparent
Like idle said, you need to add shadows to make things look like they are actually there. Not sure if gimp has a burn tool, but that is what you can use. Or just paint with 5% black.
Just keep your file at 400*150 and zoom in if you can't see.

Ron pretty much summed it up.
In PS, there is a separate function called Drop Shadow where you can adjust the lighting (shadow), the degree of rotation among other things. Not sure about Gimp though as I've never used it.
All it does really is give things realistic depth.
