Open beta is supposed to start late January I believe. At this point, may as well wait for that instead of purchasing the beta.

It won't save you from D3. I would take up Torchlight before PoE.

Torchlight is a decent game, but nothing special.
PoE is very deep and very replayable with large amounts of character customization.
