Question for the PS3 folks

I will be getting a PS3 tomorrow. A friend of mine actually bought a Sony tv last year and it came with one and it is still in the box. I do not know the memory size (if there are different sizes like Xbox) or if it is a slim or old fat one.

Question 1. I have always heard about the updates taking a while on PS3. Is that true? If so, about how much time may I be looking at once I connect it to the internet to catch up on a year's worth of updates?

Question 2. Do I have to wait until I get it and do the updates to create a gamertag or is there a place to do it online before hand?

Question 3. How much is the PS3 premium service and is it worth it? I think I've seen a few of you say that by being a premium member you get free downloads occasionally.

I will eventually get some games for it, but for now just wondering how to set it all up tomorrow.

The updates only take a long time if you're on wifi. If you have it hardwired, they don't take more than 10-12 minutes for large patches and game addo ons, maybe 2-5 minutes or so for system updates.

You're a BF3 player right? BF3 Premium edition is $40 (the original game plus Premium) on Amazon right now.

Sadly yes. DSL. It's the only option where I live. Thanks, hopefully I can let it start updated tomorrow or by the latest Saturday morning.

If your updates take too long, you can always put them on a USB drive and install them from there.

Not a bad deal on BF3. Thank you. I'll check it out a little later today

My updates never take that long. Just depends if you have it hard wired or not. And if not how far ur ps3 is from router.

It will be wireless and about 20 feet (give or take) from the router

eta: My Xbox works fine at that distance so hopefully the PS3 will as well.

The paid service (Playstation Plus) is ABSOLUTELY worth it. You may not see any games you want for the first couple of months but they release new content (either free or discounted) every Tuesday for PS+ subscribers. You ESPECIALLY want to have PS+ around the time that E3 comes out. Last year they gave away over $250 worth of free games to PS+.

The downside to PS+ is that if you don't have it renewed you will lose your ability to play any game you've downloaded via PS+. However, lets say you download a game, and then a few months later your subscription runs out. You cant play it for those few months, but if you go out and renew your subscription, you can get that game back and all the saves.

I had to go out and buy a 1 TB hard drive for my PS3 because of all the free shite i've got over the past year and some months.

Well most of them are not available to purchase anymore. You just have to keep checking the Playstation Store weekly for the deals.

ETA: You don't have to download any game you don't want to. I just download them because I have the Hard drive space to do so. I haven't played 95% of the games i've downloaded. They are just fun to have.

Oh I know. This is one thing that I'm not sure I would like though.

1. Updates never take long for me, but I'm usually hard wired 90% of the time. Also, you won't have to catch up on a year's worth of updates; you will only have to download the latest one.

2. If you want to sign up before, just google playstation network and then click the join now link.

3. I don't have Playstation Plus because I don't think I would use it very often since I usually stick to retail games. However, I have heard from people who have it that they love it.

With PS+ you can set it to download game/system updates at a certain time of day.

Yep.. I have mine run from 4 AM to 6 AM. It downloads system updates, game patches (only games that you own).. It's really honestly worth it.

I usually pull updates when I go to bed on Xbox now because it takes a while on my internet connection (if it is a big system update or game update like BF) so I would likely do the same on the PS
