My latest laptop is a Toshiba.
It's a monster, but I not a pussy so I don't mind that it weighs 5-10 lbs.

I prefer MacBooks, but if you are going the Windows route, I have had nothing but nightmares with my company issued Lenovo Thinkpad. I have the T410 model and it blows, hard. I've heard good things about Toshibas though

This is my laptop, its a Samsung Series 9 ultrabook. It is more expensive than other ultrabooks, but thats because it has better features. 1600x900 HD matte screen, solid state hard drive, and a faster processor. I have had it for a few months now and love it, its extremely light and thin. It's the thinnest and lightest laptop on the market in its class, even thinner/lighter than the Macbook Air.
This is the 2nd generation, but you can still buy the 1st generation Series 9 for a lot cheaper, in the 800 dollar range. The first generation is still good, really the only difference is the screen resolution.

I've had a MacBook Pro for a few years now. I have to say this thing is a beast. They are pricy but they are worth it IMO.

If there is one feature I think you should absolutely have, its a solid state hard drive
I know the storage capacity is smaller, but it makes up for it with speed. Solid state hard drives are so much faster than spinning hard drives, and you don't have to worry about hard drive crashes or corruption.
My computer starts up in about 5 seconds, and everything runs fast and smooth. Screaming fast, all thanks to the solid state drive

if you want quality hardware and sofware that will last, and you don't mind paying a little extra for it, a macbook is your answer.
