UPDATE: Marquette Beats LSU, 84-80

LSU (7-1) takes the road for the 3rd consecutive game to play Marquette (7-3) on Saturday, December 22nd at 1:00PM central on ESPNU. The Tigers defeated a 10-0 Golden Eagles squad last year at the PMAC 67-59. Coach Jones is looking forward to the contest. "This Marquette game is more like conference play from having a quick turnaround and only a day or two to install scouting reports." That being said, it looks like it will be a tough task for the Tigers.
Marquette already has had impressive wins over Wisconsin and USC, and beat SEC foe Mississippi State. On Wednesday, Marquette took the road to play Wisconsin-Green Bay (Coached by Brian Wardle who played for Marquette from 97-01) and were defeated 49-47 in a game where they only attempted 49 shots. In contrast, LSU took 70 in their win Tuesday versus UCI. Marquette's other losses, both away from home, came against Butler and Florida.
Marquette plays 10 regularly and will be able to run with the Tigers. Similarly to LSU, one of their best players comes in off the bench. Davante Gardner plays 20 minutes a game, scores 12.1 (2nd on team), pulls down 5.6 rebounds, and shoots almost 60% from the field. At 6'8" 290 pounds, he could be a serious matchup problem if O'Bryant isn't able to stay on the court. Not sure if ADP could contain him defensively.
While it is possible that the Tigers start Anthony Hickey, Coach Jones stated a few times this week that Anthony must "earn" his starting spot back in practice. With the emergence of Corban Collins as a scoring threat, I think you could see them both on the court together a good bit this game, but look for Collins to get the starting nod. Del Piero has been quiet since becoming a regular starter, but I don't think he is going anywhere with very few options for Jones.
While Marquette's starting lineup isn't very big, they do have tons of athleticism. They have Jamil Wilson who is 6'7" and Steve Taylor who is 6'7" that come off the bench. The Golden Eagles will not beat LSU with size. They don't beat you with three point shots. They beat you playing hard nose defense and athleticism. In their three losses they scored 71, 49 and 47. They have been held under 65 points in 4 of their 10 games. LSU's pressure defense must force turnovers and contain their scoring to beat the Golden Eagles.
Davante Gardner coming in off the bench scares me. He is a very big boy and I am not sure how LSU will try to stop him. Jamil Wilson, Marquettes 2nd highest SoS Rated player also comes in off the bench at 6'7" tall and could be a problem for the Tigers. Playing similarly to Shane Hammink he is a combo guard/forward who has length and a nice shot (10 of 19 from 3 point range).
The Tigers need to control the boards and win the turnover battle to have a chance in this game. Marquette is 5-0 at home and will not be an easy opponent to face. The Harris Bradley Center is the 11th largest arena in D-1 basketball holding up to 18,600. Expect a rowdy crowd and a team ready to redeem a poor performance on Wednesday.
Prediction:
LSU 68, Marquette 72
Season - 18-11, NIT

Nice write up SoS.
I like your prediction. Marquette is a tough place to play and I expect a rowdy crowd. This game will help us prepare for conference play. It would be great if we came out with a win, but I'm not holding my breath.

First page.
Tigahs gonna win if refs keep their shite off the whistle, give JOB some space. That Boise game was so hard to watch.

We not losing to marquette because they have a hard time scoring. Sorry south you wrong on that prediction. All we have to do is score 70 and we will be fine.

If the Tigers win, Ill be as excited as Coach Jones. BUT that being said, I want to be real with you. If I predicted a win everytime, the predictions would lose value. Besides the Boise prediction, I have been within a couple points every time. Im hoping for the win, but a close hard fought battle would be alright to prepare the team.

i kinda think they'll lose by 10+.

We won't have the nearly the number of possessions as we normally do. Sadly, I see us losing a close one here.

I hope not, but it is possible. If JOB gets in foul trouble I have no clue who could even begin to stop Davante Gardner. At 290lbs he would manhandle ADP. Thinking of Eddie guarding him makes me laugh out loud. SO lets pray that JOB stays in the game.

I think it will depend on how much energy we play with and how mentally sharp we are. If we come out flat like we did at Boise and make a bunch of turnovers it will be another blowout.
If we are aggresive and cause turnovers ourselves and fight hard for every rebound and contest every shot, we will do great.
Of course dropping a few shots (as Stringer goes do we go?) wouldn't hurt.

MU is tough and will battle you big time defensively. They weren't huge last year either, but they were good enough to finish 2nd in the always tough (well maybe not after this year) Big East. They're very well coached. For LSU to have a shot in this game, they MUST keep the turnover's low. Otherwise, a 10-15 point loss is likely

That should definitely be the case. Marquette loves to slow the game down. I wouldn't be surprised if the Tigers try and bump up the pace just because Marquette isn't use to it. Just look at # of possessions for each team
Marquette: 69, 67, 65, 71, 62, 68, 61, 64, 68, 55
LSU: 72, 69, 87, 71, 72, 75, 74, 72
They have had 1 game above 70 possessions and we have had 1 below. We run, they don't.
If I was Coach Jones I'd try to push Marquette out of their comfort zone. Possibly some early pressing. Who knows. Should be a good one.

marquette has no problem playing at a fast pace. i hope we don't run ourselves out of the game too early. transition D improved last game and it'll have to be even better. gonna have to finish those looks near the rim and try to get johnny involved early in case the fouls start to accumulate. hickey is going to have to be at his best in this one.
