I read some comments from a couple 12-string players in another thread, which lead me to start this one.

Along with a couple 6-strings, I play a 12-string Seagull Coastline. I love the sound but find it harder to play—I have small hands and my fretting hand hurts from having to grip the thicker neck along with pressing down on the double strings. I can play the thing for maybe 5-10 minutes at a time before giving my hands a break by going back to a 6-string.

Anyway, for you fellow 12-stringers, what are your likes and dislikes about the instrument? Anyone else have the small hands problem? If you do, how do you work around it?

Just takes getting used to. I find them more forgiving, and I love the sound, but I generally stick to six string.

Vagasil is great for your vajaja. JK

12-String are awesome, but yes, they take time to become use to.

Warren Haynes plays a 12-string Les Paul with Gov't Mule some times, here is on song Railroad Boy at Jazzfest he plays it on. So badass!

I've had my Seagull for a year or so—it is what it is, I guess. At the moment the songs I play on my 12-string are anywhere from 5-10 minutes long. Some songs are easier on my fretting hand than others, but after two songs I put the thing down and take up my 6-string again. In a typical two-hour jam I'll play the 12-string three separate times, doing two songs at a time.

I love the 12-string sound and I'm glad I have one—it's just my bad luck to have hands that are not well-suited for playing the thing, at least for an extended time period.

I have a 12-string Martin Ive had since college 20 yrs ago... I dont really play anymore but every blue moon i break it out.

Most of the time I just had 6 on it b/c its a pain in the arse to tune 12. Got so used to it, a regular 6-string guitar feels tiny to me and fingers all jammed up.

PS the sound with all 12 on it is magical

Yeah, I'd probably put mine aside but it sounds so damn good. I write songs specifically for my 12-string and they sound beautiful—not bragging here, I'm a shitty guitarist, but as someone else wrote, the instrument has a way of making me sound much better than I am.

"It is definitely forgiving"

Especially if you play it in DADGAD tuning. Just noodling around sounds awsome.

If you can use an amp, James Tyler Variax FTW? (I know it's fake, but it's not bad, either.)

I am not worthy.
Must be fun to mess around with though.
