Since I'm not well versed on AR parts other than lowers and such, is there anything I need to check for on this upper? I know there is no BCG- that would be the first thing I would have to check to make sure its legit. Since there isn't one, is the rest basically good to go?

Check the feed ramps and make sure that they arent worn to shite and back. Check the barrel to make sure that the grooves still look good and isnt gouged or smooth. Thats basically it since there is no BCG.

I'm not positive, I'm still on my first build also. I hear allot of talk about "headspace" but I'm pretty clueless in that dept.

Colt upper shouldn't have headspace issues. If he put the barrel into the upper receiver, maybe. But I dont believe that is the case.

For what? An AR? I am going to get one for an offset sight. I would not use one for a main sight though. I believe that there are better options for not much more.

Gotcha. What exactly causes headspace issues? Barrel not being tourqed right?

Not an expert, but that is my understanding.

I have never built an upper. I have only purchased completed ones.

This is supposedly a brand new, never shot upper so I shouldn't find any type of wear

Exactly. Might be worth watching a few YouTube videos on wear spots on uppers so that you know what to look for. However, its not hard to see whats going on.

Thats what I'm doing right now so I don't look like an idiot asking the guy to show me where the feed ramps are

Hmmm. I started asking a few questions and got on the topic of the barrel. I thought the whole setup was new and it was a Colt barrel that came with the upper. Turns out it is an older barrel that they have used before, a Rainer. He said there are no marks on it, and if a 556 SS barrel with 1/7 twist. Should I reconsider?

Does he know how many rounds have been through it? Ranier makes good stuff, but since it's a used barrel that brings the value down, in my opinion.

I asked him, waiting for a response.

I agree. Either way, I'm lowering my offer

Said ~450 rounds and the feed ramps are great.

Still lowering my offer since my original was for what I thought was new never fired

Ranier makes fine barrels. Not match grade but better than the cheap ones. Lower your offer. If you don't like the barrel, keep it till things calm down and get a DD or Noveske barrel.

If worst comes to worst and you don't like the barrel you can always sell it and get one you do like. I'm about to pursue a build myself once things calm a bit. You fellers have convinced me.
