re: Juno

I have only seen Juno once, shortly after it came out. My initial impression from even the previews/ trailers was that it was trying to be an edgy film about a controversial issue. This led me to think that the entire subject matter is contrived with the intents of being edgy to gain attention and to fit some sort of trendy pop persona. When I viewed it I thought it was a solid movie but not particularly memorable. I kinda already had my preconceived notions going into it though.

Your passion for it makes me want to rewatch it to see if I missed something special, but based on your prior comments in this thread I think we may just have different tastes in movies.

Just posting this gay reference was gay.

How does a 50 year old self proclaimed movie buff consider Juno and inglorious bastards the two greatest movies of all time? Have you never watch an Alfred Hitchcock, Ford, Scorsese, Kurosawa, Chaplin, Coen, or Kubrick film? I mean really, wft.

Granted, a la Kevin Smith, the wittiness of Cody's dialogue crosses the border of pretentiousness like Mexicans over an Obama-guarded Texas wall

O god make it stop.

It's a great movie, but you're reaching.

I love Bateman's and Page's awkward relationship.

Yeah dude, let me beg forgivemess for having different tastes than you. I'm sure Scorsese's gangster movie was much better. Or was it his other gangster movie? Or his other gangster movie? Or his other gangster movie? Or his other gangster movie? How about I just pick a generic list of the greatest oldschool directors and pick the movies I'm "supposed" to like because that's what everyone else said. The movie had massive critical acclaim, massive mainstream success, multiple Oscar nominations, yet from half the comments around here it was unfit for the screen. Can't stand Kubrick's films. The Coens put out some good stuff, but nothing I'd count amongst my favorites. This is going to be a fun ride.

iwy, for someone so in tune with the work of the masters, the irony of my original post playing on the pretentiousness of a handful of people on here has gone so far over your head that it's disappointing. Of course, it does lack the insight and brilliance of a post like "Would you rather be a bear or a shark?"

re: Juno

I'm being too harsh on Kubrick. A Clockwork Orange mesmerized me as a kid. But his stuff that I don't like, I REALLY don't like. For me, before I get into overanalyzing a movie, the one primary question is, "Was I entertained?" That, in the end, is the bottom line. And by all means a significant body of work buys a writer or director a couple Mulligans. But I can't stand it when people jump on the bandwagon because they are expected to. And that mentality runs rampant.

It's a good movie, but not a GOAT. I liked the weird music in it.

Juno's a great movie, no doubt. As others have said, you're overstating it a bit, but I do think it deserved all the recognition it got.

Another movie in the same vein with the same sort of feel that I enjoyed was It's Kind of a Funny Story. Sets the same kind of college aged coffee shop tone but is very engaging with its wittiness a lot like Juno. If you liked Juno you would like that one I believe if you haven't already seen it.

What has it been today people proposing some pretty good films are among the best of all time. Juno is yet again not even close.

This. Ellen Page was fine in Juno but the weak link in Inception. The plot for Juno doesn't stand up all that well to actual thought.

I liked it.I'm a little older. They'd lock me up for having an "Ellen Page" crush.I like the kid that knocked her up.The one that was in Superbad. Also I like the song they play together at the end.It was a cute movie. If it's your top movie, well, you'll enjoy R-rated movies when you get old enough.

eta: Wut.I'm confused.With the love of Twilight and Juno I thought.Hold on.Wut....

re: Juno

I saw Juno in Denver at a screener before it was released to theatres and fell in love with it. I will admit over time that my feelings about it have softened but it is still excellent and witty. Putting it as far up as the OP has is a bit of a stretch.
