| MIT develops robotic equivalent of a Swiss army knife (Posted on 12/8/12 at 1:11 am)
quote:
The device doesn’t look like much: a caterpillar-sized assembly of metal rings and strips resembling something you might find buried in a home-workshop drawer. But the technology behind it, and the long-range possibilities it represents, are quite remarkable. The little device is called a milli-motein — a name melding its millimeter-sized components and a motorized design inspired by proteins, which naturally fold themselves into incredibly complex shapes. This minuscule robot may be a harbinger of future devices that could fold themselves up into almost any shape imaginable.
Nerd fap!

You didn't even watch the video. Go watch the video first. It is pretty cool.

Drown a Swiss Army knife and the robot, together. Now try to slit your wrists with either one and report back on their viabilities. My point is that sometimes the wheel can't be reinvented.

Made the same thing out of Legos in 1998. The world wasn't ready for it.

18-wheelers and powerboats. Also, following my Ascension Parish roots, I could build some kick-ass low riders.

Care to explain any of this? And I had no idea how small that thing is. Really tiny new motor technology. Pretty awesome if they can eventually expand on this and have it developed enough to make longer chains.

In all honesty, my earbuds already do this on their own without the use of motors. Not too impressed
