McConnell filibusters his own bill

quote:

In a bit of parliamentary squabbling common only to the United States Senate, the chamber will not be voting Thursday on President Obama’s proposal to largely shift responsibility for raising the debt ceiling from Congress to the White House.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) proposed an immediate vote on the idea Thursday morning, as a way to highlight potential Democratic unease with the idea.

This afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) called that bluff, asking to proceed to immediate vote on the measure. But he asked for an up-or-down vote, allowing the Senate to skip to a final vote by which the measure could be approved on a simple 51-vote majority.

quote:

McConnell countered the measure should require a 60-vote majority, as most votes do in the Senate. “What we’re talking about here is a perpetual debt ceiling grant, in effect, to the president. Matters of this level of controversy always require 60 votes,” McConnell said.

Reid objected to the 60-vote threshold. “What we have here is a case of Republicans here in the Senate once again not taking yes for an answer,” Reid said. “Now the Republican leader objects to his own idea. So I guess we have a filibuster of his own bill.”

This is a rare screw up for McConnell. He's an excellent politician. He must be concerned about Ashley Judd.

Surprised Harry Reid had the time, after all yesterday he had a very important vote on whether to allow movie snacks in the senate auditorium for the Lincoln movie screening

An excellent politician would never be bested by Harry Reid. You might as well think of him as just another schmuck.

Of course it is not a screw up.

Harry Reid does not want Democrats exposed in floor discussions of something that is not only stupid, but likely unconstitutional. He does not want pathetic Democrat policy seeing the light of day in debate. That is the point. Reid wants to circumvent Senate rules to avoid embarrassing his ilk. It will not happen. Any bull shite the WH buffoons try to pass will require a debate on the Senate floor. That debate will continue until 60 Senators feel the issue has been appropriately vetted and consent to end discussion. Then and only then will they call the issue to a vote. It is a Senate mechanism designed to give fair hearing to legislation.

THAT IS THE POINT !

Ignoring those rules and their rational is ignoring reality, which is something Harry Reid specializes in.

How is it McConnel filibustering if Reid wants to break procedure and not vote the normal 60 vote means

I think McConnel is as bad as Boehner, but I don't think what he did was wrong or bad.

McConnel called for a vote, Reid said "no", waited a few days, then said "Yes" but only if you change the rules.

And? McConnell called for it to be voted on using normal Senate procedures... Reid denied it, but then said "oh, agree to change the rules and I'll agree to it"

Who gives a shite about the reasoning

I do. I understand what you're saying. I'm not suggesting this is akin to Watergate. You don't think it's odd or newsworthy that McConnell filibustered his own proposal?

re: McConnell filibusters his own bill

quote:

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) proposed Thursday that the Senate hold an immediate vote on a proposal from President Obama that would essentially give the president the ability to unilaterally raise the nation’s debt ceiling.

“Look: the only way we ever cut spending around here is by using the debate over the debt limit to do it. Now the President wants to remove that spur to cut altogether. It gets in the way of his spending plans,” McConnell said on the floor of the Senate. “I assure you: it’s not going to happen. The American people want Washington to get spending under control. And the debt limit is the best tool we have to make the President take that demand seriously.”

The maneuver is designed to force Democrats to go on record in support of largely removing Congress’s role in the sensitive issue of the nation’s legal borrowing limit. Republicans believe many Democrats facing tough reelection battles in 2014 would never vote to hand that kind of power to President Obama. Regardless, the measure would be unlikely to draw the Republican support to muster the 60 votes necessary to pass the Senate, meaning Democrats would be forced to take a tough vote on a bill doomed to failure. McConnell often proposes immediate votes on Obama’s proposals as a way to attempt to highlight potential Democratic unease.

Sourced from the same misconstruing lib rag that formed basis for the OP

I think it is exceedingly odd that you are under the impression McConnell filibustered a bill which was never even allowed to reach the Senate Floor for discussion.

How does that work exactly?

You're missing the point entirely.

McConnell: Let's vote on giving the president the authority to raise the debt ceiling.

Reid: OK. I call your bluff: Simple majority vote?

McConnell: I fold.

Don't understand why McConnell didn't go ahead with it. I doubt it would pass and if it did blame could go on the President.

Did McConnell filibuster the bill?

It's really a simple question.

If not, your OP not only misses the point, it misses reality.
quote:

McConnell: Let's vote on giving the president the authority to raise the debt ceiling.
Reid refused and instead tried to change the rules. That is the point.

OTOH, why not bring the President's wonderful proposal to the Senate Floor?

McConnell didn't filibuster his own bill he filibustered, since that is the word you want to use, Reid's attempt to circumvent the normal voting rules of the US Senate.

McConnell did not filibuster anything.
Nothing. Nada. Ziltch.

Words mean something.
There was no filibuster. There was not even a proposal to filibuster. There was a proposal to bring the issue to the floor for a vote which in the US Senate guarantees discussion and debate. Reid refused that prospect.

Period.

Asserting anything different is a bold faced lie.
