| Why did the GOP kill a treaty for the disabled ? (Posted on 12/6/12 at 9:13 pm)
I'm watching this on Anderson right now. George Bush supported this treaty. Bob Dole supported this treaty. Anderson asked Santorum (who publicly lobbied against it) and a whole host of current GOP senators that had publicly supported this then flip flopped at the last minute to come on his show and explain themselves. No one would come on his show. I know a lot of the bat shite crazy far right groups were against it ( Family Research Council, etc.) Does anyone know why they changed their votes on this at the last minute? This article doesn't give any reasons.
quote:
In what many are calling one of the most disgraceful days in the United States Senate in recent memory, 38 Republican senators joined to reject the UN treaty that would ban discrimination against people with disabilities. The treaty was negotiated and first signed by President George W. Bush and then again signed by President Obama in 2009. More than 153 other countries have signed it. Ill and sitting in a wheelchair in the chamber, former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan) watched as a treaty that symbolized so much of his life's work was voted down by 38 of his fellow Republicans. My suggestion to Dole would be to walk away from the party that has clearly walked away from him. In 1978 I moved to Washington D.C. to direct the White House Conference on Handicapped Individuals/Implementation Unit. The conference itself was held under the auspices of President Gerald R. Ford and President Jimmy Carter committed to carry out its recommendations. The work of ensuring that people with disabilities would have an equal chance at living a full and productive life was a non-partisan issue. People from both parties believed that we must ensure they had a chance to succeed and the opportunity to use all of their abilities. Men like Senator Bob Dole (R-Kan) and Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) fought together to ensure equal access to places and programs. This vote against the treaty brings shame on those who voted to reject it. How they will look their disabled constituents in the eye ever again one can't imagine. Senator McConnell should feel the most shame for leading his party in the Senate to the point that they would do this to the nearly 40 million disabled people in the nation. This treaty didn't change any American laws. It merely asked that all other nations move toward laws for people with disabilities that would equal the Americans with Disabilities Act that we first passed in 1990. By passing the treaty we would sit on the Commission that would look to implement it. Some ultra-conservative senators actually misrepresented the law in order to encourage people to oppose it by telling many who home-school their children that it would in some way impact them.

the treaty had no enforcement arm, and the terms of the treaty were already existing U.S. laws. They rejected it because it was redundant and unnecessary.

Yeah, I'm sure their reasoning is they love to discriminate against handicapped folks. Jesus Christ, do you ever think there may be other reasons than those that are not stated by an obviously biased source. Is it necessary? Don't OUR laws already provide for that protection? You are fricking awful.

I'm quite sure the U.S. disabled are treated about as well as anywhere in the world. Why do we need to have the BS folks at the U.N. helping to write policy that we should follow?

The bill did absolutely nothing. Every. Single. Thing. in the bill is already US law. Thus, the only thing the bill accomplishes if sacrificing American autonomy to the bloated UN.

Link? I don't believe that. Why would George Bush and Bob Dole have worked so long on this?

I think the fear was that it allowed the UN to determine disability. Which because we signed the Treaty the fear was that we would comply to whatever the UN deemed as disabled. Which could cause problems here domestically.

Did I fricking say this? I want to know why they killed this treaty. None of them would come on Anderson to explain themselves. Santorum was ranting that the UN could tell Americans what to do with their children or some stupid shite that was shot down by someone on the show. It doesn't make any sense.

Why do you feel this treaty was needed in the US? WTF did it do for the country that isn't currently being done?

What's the actual wording of said treaty? Also, if our laws already cover this, why would we need to sign it? I don't understand it's point. There are two sides to every treaty. What was our involvement?

So the GOP thinks the UN can tell Americans what to do? Dear God.
