There's never been a question that its being manipulated.
The only question is why people aren't marching with pitch ofrks and torches on the lying bastards that steal our money daily.

Because most people fall into one of these categories
A. They contribute a net negative to the treasury because of the vast amount of government resources they utilize
B. They contribute a statistically meaningless amount to the treasury and use some level of government resources
C. They contribute a lot to the treasury but are too rich to care
Really, I think the only people who should be upset about taxes are people like me. Upper middle class income and nothing meaningful in the way of deductions. But I'm not even really that upset about it. Someone has to fund all this shite and I'm just pitching in my small part.

From what I understand, the published number isn't exact, and there are probably some mathematical "assumptions" made to project the number. Change the assumptions slightly and you get a different result, all you got to do then is explain why you made that assumption, and when you are forced to revise the numbers, you talk about how you were "wrong" about your initial assumption.
Kinda like climate models. Change a few assumptions, we're either going to boil like eggs or freeze into the opposite version of Pompeii ice cubes.

It's called seasonal adjustments. It's a black box of voo doo that basically amounts to someone in the office tweaking the raw number a few tenths in whatever direction they want. It doesn't work forever, and it eventually has to be paid back, but it can hide a few bad months if you use it right.

Pitching in your small part directly into a fire that will consume every dollar without any meaningful improvements to our country.
You sound like one of the sheeple that are talked about. "I'm just pitching in my small part," why not give more to a charity with a good reputation for a cause you can get behind? Do you think the government is spending your money appropriately? You are OK with giving 2+ months of your hard work to the government? I respect your opinion often, but you should demand more productivity for your current tax payments before giving more.

I actually disagree with a lot of our government spending but we're stuck with most of it. Not like we can expect the country to thrive if we stop sending out SS checks tomorrow.

NO WE ARE NOT. This is the attitude of most democrats (I don't know your affiliation). The attitude of we cannot cut spending unless it is military spending because then we are not pure democrats if we agree with cutting spending.

SS is a non-discretionary expenditure that is unsustainable in the long run. Nobody is proposing to dissolve SS, but to sit back and say it's OK is a joke. Just because it is sustainable for 2 more decades, doesn't mean it wouldn't benefit our country if we reformed it now to save money.
The country has a spending problem, not a revenue problem. If and when the country (majority of voters) realizes that spending is the problem, we can move forward. EVERYTHING needs to be cut or reformed soon. Cause soon we will see the REAL fiscal cliff. If you think I am being extreme, I am only trying to figure out how someone would be willing to pay more to the government as they continue to increase spending and debt. It is a bad investment at this point.
