no, I realize that. Sorry if I didn't make that apparent. When it comes to management, I have sincere reservations about how resources are allocated and wasted. I've seen a lot of educational waste and unwise investment in resources, that cost taxpayers a lot of money. In terms of hardware, software, programming, class offerings, etc. I think there should be much better and smarter investment. And I've seen way too many instances of board members making decisions and spending money that was going to fail from the beginning.

I think that until we can spend money more wisely, we can't be certain if we're spending too much or not enough. The administration and middle management in education can be bloated and inefficient and redundant.

You'll get no disagreement from me there.

My post above was just to point out that economics can be something that impacts education generally. And ask to what extent it was impacting what you were seeing. When I say "economics" that's a tough characteristic because it's so broad. From the kinds of things you're talking about like expenses and staffing as well as the economic infrastructure for the school and surrounding areas.

Mississippi's is terrible. We have over 100 school districts and our education is awful and the people running them are corrupt. That is why private schools are so popular here.

Texas has 2 districts and is way higher in education than MS. Think about that.

It starts at the top. John White is as useless a mouthpiece bureaucrat as we have in Louisiana. I get regular propaganda... er... I mean informational email updates from his offices regularly (this isn't really meant to be exclusive, anyone can) and it's transparently dismissible. We are talking educationally clueless from the top down.

what do you mean?

I spent years in Texas and one district, but we were surrounded by others. I'm not sure what you mean. There are independent school districts all over the state. And the number of districts in TX is over 1000 I believe. (One site said it was around 1030 with over 9000 schools)

And I don't know how bad MS is from personal experience, but Texas is pretty awful in lots of regards. if you want to set up a comparison, I'm not sure that TX is the best option.

There are districts in Mississippi that have literally one school in them

But don't you guys get it?!?! It's the red states that take in more fed money than they give back, so this is OBVIOUSLY republicans who are poor and wasting the money. C'mon guys, you are just too racist to see this through!

Damn republicans.

re: marriage percentage in African American community

Yeah, this is a big one. It's a huge problem that is compounded due to the sensitive nature of the subject. 'Unwed mothers' (generally speaking - and obviously YMMV on an individual basis) is an absolute disaster.

We have "cities" within cities where the residents don't share the same values as the rest of the country. It's like another world. They are 4th and 5th generation welfare recipients. How in the hell are they going to break out of that? They literally don't know any better. It's messed up.

you said "rich" in addition to "white" so I'm wondering which plays a bigger role (since you didn't just say "white" districts)? Do you think it's a function of race or socioeconomic status or both?

It sure appears that finding a smart black person is really the exception to the rule.

What utter BS, if not for the federal programs to reward having at risk children and the fecundity of the black woman, the black community would be even more poverty stricken. Unemployable black males don't provide wealth, AFDC and SSI create wealth.

I will add that a lot of these employees are considered behavioral consultants; that is, thier only job is to help develop and implement behavioral programs for the kids who are acting out. This is one of the reasons why there are so many more staff. It goes along with the misbehavior in these communities.

We have over 150 superintendents in Mississippi. Their association has an ANNUAL budget of over $1 million. When you try to reform education, you wind up fighting that budget.

Those red states also have the highest percentage of blacks. YOu want to blame Republicans or blame blacks?

See, you can play that cheap shot with stats a number of ways.

From what I understand the ISD system is pretty good. Yeah the huge Dallas/Houston ISDs suck, but that goes back to the economics/parents not caring/million other problems addressed in this thread. But many of the ISDs are fantastic. They tried to do it in Memphis and it was ruled unconstitutional by the state. They still want them though.
