Going Salmon/Halibut fishing in Alaska next summer

It's going to be a guided trip on the Kenai. I'm not a big fisher. As in the last time I have been was 2.5 years ago on the Pacific coast of Mexico. I was wondering if any of you have any experience up there and am wondering what to expect, tips, and general information/experiences.

i went about 10 years ago. It was a lot of fun. The place we were at supplied a guide to go with you in your boat for the day so he is expecting a pretty nice tip at the end of the day. That was kinda aggravating.

The funny thing is nobody was catching crap for the several hours then all the other boats started pulling in the some HUGE SALMON and our guide laughed. He said they are 'baiting', which is illegal, basically u put some salmon eggs on your hook and they hit with in a matter of seconds. That's why it's illegal, but the 'tours' want you to catch something so u go back.

Good timing.

Where on the Kenai will you be? Pretty diverse place. Lots of folks like to fish out of Homer, but Seward is just as good and has better wildlife.

I went halibut fishing out of Seward. Went out on a charter boat with eight or ten other people. Jigging with cut up bait and a rod about as thick as a pool cue. Not a whole lot of skill involved, just drop it over the side and let the line play out until your bait hits the bottom and jig it up and down. Fun when you get a big one on.

Another of my group got flown out to some remote location and dropped off for the day to salmon fish. Caught some nice king salmon and saw a bear or two.

I really like Seward. Used to stay at a place on the river on Exit Glacier Rd. Homer is pretty cool but you can do everything in Seward you can do in Homer, and more.

Homer looked a little like the Jersey Shore to me. I like Seward. I want to try the Mount Marathon race some day. Been to Valdez, too. It was nice, what I could see of it. Clouds were down nearly to ground level when I was there.

I like Homer, but don't think I would want to live there.

Screw that... The 4th is awesome in Seward though. Have had some great times in that town.

Sounds like Juneau more than half the year. About 2/3rds of our days are overcast or mostly cloudy.

Valdez and Whittier got bombed with snow last winter. I flew over Valdez and many of the buildings were buried. Whittier stopped counting snowfall at 550"

Glad I'll be there in the summer. I'll be outside of Kenai, staying at a lodge.

Did a couple trips out of Valdeez a few years back. First week of July is a great time to go.

We used Sanity Charters. Great trips.

If yuor Captain puts you on fish, there isnt anything to catching them. Cut bait bounced on the bottom, start reeling when you get a fish on.

About the start of the second run, which begins in late June on the Kenai River. First week of July may be a bit early for Sockeye and the largest of the Kings but you will beat the worst of the crowds but still be prepared for "combat fishing."
