I'm a warehouse supervisor (OT poor) and I have a young guy (20) that works for me.This young man is "off" a little. He rarely talks to anyone the first couple of hours and when he does he makes up all kind of crazy stories.He came to work wearing a long sleeve shirt today, he never wears them even when it's really cold. I kept asking him why and he rolls his sleeve up and told me he slashed it(wrist) this weekend(looked invected). He had showed me other cuts he had on him before but said he done it when he was young. I had worked with his aunt before and we (my boss and I) called her. She told me that he thinks that no one likes him.He is hard to get along with but I feel sorry for the kid. I told her he really needed to get some type of help and she said she would get him some...have any of you ever known anyone to cut their self on purpose?

yeah, i knew a girl that used to do this.
I still don't fully understand how this "releases" pain or stress.

A girl I dated a long time ago did this once when she was drunk as shite. Her weird, emo friend that I hated egged her on.

Yes. Friend of mine slit her wrist a few tears ago and she also cuts herself.

yes...it's typically their response to stressful situations when they feel out of control. If he did it as a teen and hasn't done it until recently, then he's facing a severe stressor right now and probably needs professional help. You might want to talk to him, in private. Tell you want to make sure that everything is OK with him and ask him point blank if he needs help or is considering hurting himself further. If you're not sure how to handle and your company has EAP, call them and ask them how to handle.

yea this guy was emo also in high school(I've seen pics)...I've got another guy who gives him a hard time and I told him to ease up..but I can't baby sit all day though..I also told the other employee that anyone that cuts their self probaly wouldn't have a problem cutting someone else

I have never known someone personally, but have heard quite a bit about it...I may be completely off base, but it sounds like a plea for attention to me (and that is exactly what he is getting)...
honestly, there are all kinds of complications that arise fromn talking about this kind of thing with an employee or anyone else...I would turn it over to your company's HR department immediately and let them handle it...you certainly don't want to get yourself or your company into a lawsuit becsuse of something that you did...
