Tax hikes and budget cuts seem like a win-win situation for both parties? Dems get their taxes, Repubs get their budget cuts. I personally would like to see the bottom drop out of this whole thing. Its going to happen sooner or later, might as well take the licks now and move forward.

It would actually be much better long term. I think there was a recent CBO report that said as much. But, politicians don't get elected by doing what is best for the long term.

I understand that to some degree, but the cuts won't really hit entitlements. So Repubs won't really get the cuts they want. Plus the economy will tank, pushing down government revenues, thus increasing the deficit. So it would sort of defeat the purpose.

Sure maybe for both parties but not for Americans. We don't need tax increases we only need spending cuts. Massive cuts.

The cut is 450 billion to military... Meanwhile, the military is being asked to step it out with less capability...won't be long until massive capabilities are lost like Chem defense MC-12 Army battalions Naval research Nuclear defense

Tax hikes
The problem is the tax hikes are there so dems can just continually spend more money on stupid shite. It isn't like they are going to use it responsibly. I pay a good chunk of taxes every year. It wouldn't be nearly as frustrating to hear the idea of raising taxes if it came along with government financial responsibility.

I just got an email from the WH that says it would be bad. And they want my help in describing how bad it will be. The email explains to me that I'm gonna have my taxes raised 2K (actually 3K in my bracket). The WH wants me to compose an email to my congressman (an evil republican) explaining all the hardships I'll endure if I lose that extra 3K. I could write about no Xmas gifts for the children. No food on the table. Can't make the mortgage and lose my house, etc.

People may have to give up the smart phones, extra tvs with extended cable, may have to bring their lunch to work a few days a week, say no to their kids a little more, not take that extra vacation or go to all the sporting events for pro and college teams. It will be chaos. I don't get all of this burden on the rich only. Everyone should do their part or no one.

But what if you're already living the austere lifestyle. I don't have a smart phone. I only have 1 TV. I cook every day; rarely eat out. Don't have any kids to say 'no' to. Haven't been on a vacation in 12 years. Haven't been to a sporting event 2 years. And don't tell me to give up Starbucks cause it ain't gonna happen.

Well first, I would tell you that you are my hero. I am striving for that lifestyle. I just paid off my truck way early, now about to pay off my student loans. Bring my lunch to work everyday so I don't use gas or extra money on eating out. Gave up my smart phone for just talk and text but if things go well my employer may take over my plan. Among people I know, we are in the minority. And I know maybe one that makes over $250K.
