| How many of you are burned out on politics? (Posted on 12/3/12 at 9:23 am)
I pretty much am. I will honestly say that while I expected Obama to win, I did not expect the total bed-shitting of the GOP on November 6. While I expected the "after action" sniping, I have been surprised at the willingness of GOP "leaders" to somehow think that Dems/Libs have their future electoral success at heart when considering their recommendations on what should be done with the party's platform, and its treatment of the conservative "right wing" of their party. It is as if the GOP has gone full retard in light of the election results. Anyway, I am finding it hard to muster any sort of passion about politics. Perhaps it is my inherent fatalism finally prevailing due to my realization that the USA of the Constitution, the nation that I have loved since I could understand just how great it was, is forever gone. That this nation is now run by the takers, and their "masters." Where the law is meaningless, and what is "right" is what is important, no matter the means. Plus, we have a press/media that in but only a few instances, has no desire or will to even try to hold the Dems/Libs accountable. Yes, I know that this decline has been going on for a while, but there always seemed to be some sort of "firewall" from complete capitualtion (Reagan, 1994 "Contract With America," the Tea Party). That's gone now. The Reagan Dems are dead, or don't care. The TP has allowed itself to be portrayed as racist anti-choice homophobes and while they do have such people in their ranks, they are still the spending enraged group they have always been, but it is too late. What's worse is that there is no conservative leadership in Congress. Boehner is useless and McConnel makes Boehner look like an effective leader. Rather that use the power of the House (the "power of the purse") to do the right things, we only hear the lament that "we are only 1/2 of 1/3 of the government. Feckless leadership = what we have now. Thus, while I will likely continue to chime in now and then when a particular topic interests me, it's over. They won. They will continue winning, and there's not a fricking thing that can be done about it. I weep for my children. Their future is truly fricked.

I think politics is just a showy manifestation of what we have become as a nation. I suppose it was inevitable. Human nature does not change...we had to know that eventually the non-producers would outnumber the producers. We have had generations of politicians now cultivating this component of human nature. When you look back on the history of the country, it is hard to believe we made it this far before self-entitlement, jealously, envy and laziness spread to the point of essentially undermining the whole experiment that turned into the United States. At least we have front row seats for the trainwreck. I personally will likely pay more attention to local politics. I will still give to the charities that I believe in and will work harder to make sure my family is as insulated as possible from the end results of progressivism in politics. I can only worry about that which I can change. I cannot change human nature nor those that utilize the faulty components thereof for their personal gain.

I threw in the towel when the No Banker Left Behind bill got passed after unprecedented voter feedback against it. Last minute pork > the will of the people. We have lost control and won't have a shot at taking it back until we vote a leader rather than a politician into office.

Things always come and go in cycles. The pendulum will swing back the other way eventually. And we may be better off transitioning to a welfare state. In another few decades technology will put a ton of people out of work permanently. It's a serious problem that not many people are thinking about. Low skill people will always exist, so what do you do when all of the lower end jobs of the economy go away? Big Brother and robot workers are coming. The future will be great in many ways, but the cost will be drastically changing the way we live and what is important to us.

Forever misdirected anger...I think this is why you are burned out.

Republican party is the only one that gave us hope. The Dem's are out for pure destruction of this great nation. Repub's were taking it a little slower. Hope all you Dem's enjoy what you have created in the next 10 years. I don't think it's going to be a pretty picture for you.

I don't know that I agree, but this is an interesting take.

I don't know that I agree either. I think it's criminal how our social safety net has robbed so many people of their ambition. But it's a serious problem we will face soon. What do you do in a capitalistic society where half the population has no marketable skills?

Put down the koolaid, his statement is accurate, there will be a cascade in 10 years and destitution in 20. Look forward to massive inheritance tax, because being born rich is not fair I foresee job placement by aptitude There will be fewer and fewer millionaires as they flee to third world havens or get crushed by the tax code

I've just resigned myself to the depressing fact that I will just be an observer as the greatest nation on earth self-destructs. The daily petty arguments between Obama and the House Republicans are juvenile and all for show. Why get involved with any of them? The voters have spoken - we are all screwed - and there is nothing we can do about it.

When you allow stupid people to vote you get what we have gotten. Ignorance is running rampant in our society. Politics now depress me.

A definitely agree. We are facing a serious socio-economic problem that no one wants to talk about. A very large (and growing) segment of the population does not have the skills/drive to support the lifestyle that they (and most of the country) feel they are entitled to. Something is going to give. My thinking was that your point about the welfare state being the best thing for the country has some validity. The country might survive longer if it drags that segment along, rather than letting it explode with discontentment. You can only do that so long though before the producers decide they no longer want to play that game.

I am not sure if its burned out or just depressed and need to step away for a little while. Take sort of the fiddle as rome burns mentality. The more you follow and read the more down and depressed you can let yourself become. I will likely stay involved but possibly do so more with local issues than national. I share the vast majority of your sentiment. I, like you, am not surprised Obama was elected or reelected although until Sandy I felt good about mittens chances. I say that with no real enthusiasm as I pretty much hated romney. The fact that ppl could reelect Obama after the past 4 years is just shocking to me. Couple that with the fact that I have not been excited to vote for a canidate is several elections and no viable 3rd party option on the horizon and you get to the state we are in right now.

What koolaid? Because I critique misplaced anger you assume I voted for the O? Thinking that the election was lost because of the "47%" "Takers" or the "MSM" is the GOPs blindness at this point...it's not fiscal issues that bury them its their cultural and social blindness, their out of step positions. And on top of that they're not fricking fiscal conservatives....I think you are the one who need put down the koolaid.

Same here for about the last 8-10 years. Burned out. Well....till I discuss politics with a blithering idiot. (see rex's nuke japan thread) Perhaps a way to earn your vote would do the trick. But the non producers are begining to win and although the process will take a while our place in the world will change very slowly. Rome declined for almost 250 years before the finale bell.

And their lies the problem...government is going broke trying to play nanny in the social engineering game. It will not work. Government needs to be out of the social and culture game completely. The R's are not fiscal conservatives either, for the most part. Career politicians are the problem, end of story. They have created the narratives and propaganda that have divided and begun the end of the USA.
