Storm-ravaged New Yorkers say President Obama’s promise to cut red tape and get them aid in the aftermath of Sandy has proven to be hot air. Angry citizens vented at FEMA officials at a town hall meeting held by the disaster relief agency Thursday, with tempers boiling over. Some 1,000 people, many left homeless by the Oct. 29 storm, attended the meeting at Staten Island’s New Dorp High School. They were initially scheduled to submit written questions that would be picked and answered at random, but the session turned into an angry shouting match where residents booed FEMA officials and accused them of lying.

Welcome to the real world where the Feds can't do shite. FEMA is awful. I'd bet that the good, private citizens that traveled to the area from all over the country did much more to help with food, medicine, etc. thank goodness we have great people in our country. I hope the area gets it going so people can get their lives back.

I am in the claims business, currently working in Louisiana and stayed out of the Sandy's mess, but I have plenty of friends up there working. I talked with a friend the other day and he said he was at a flood house with 4' of water in the first floor. The home has $80k in coverage and a van from out of state church volunteers drove up and wanted to help gut the guys home for free when some union guys showed up. The union guys ran the volunteers off and my friend just shook his head at the homeowner and explained that they just don't understand. The homeowner asked "understand what." He went on to explain: Most people don't have enough coverage including this guy. The guys home and most others in Jersey are out of code on wiring, and the entire home will have to be rewired and most of these homes are 2 story so the undamaged areas will be damaged in the process. Flood policies due not cover code upgrades. The homeowners are already greatly under insured and will have to come out of pocket to cover repairs and someone is there offering free help and unions are running them off. All the flood homes will be like New Orleans when everything is said and done, the only difference is that New Orleans had cheap illegal help and the Northeast has unions...

Yep, they have a steep learning curve coming and the bad thing is, the contractors just doing mitigation and shutting down repairs till spring due to winter coming...

Who's fault is that that they only have $80k in coverage?

A combination of the insured and possibly the agent, depending on how that conversion went, when the policy was written...

I'm curious how they did that. Were the volunteers legally barred from taking a "union job?" I honestly don't know.

So FEMA's response after Katrina was Bush's fault but FEMA's response after Sandy is FEMA's fault? Hooray for double-standards!

I was told that there was intimidation from the union guys to pack up and leave and they did so. I guess the unions don't want to loose work...

Man I hate it when my work gets loose. It makes me feel like a looser like when my shoes get lose or when I loose my car keys.

Why are they pissed at FEMA? It wasn't FEMA who promised to cut the red tape. FEMA has to follow the rules on the books. It's just another case of Obama breaking a promise he made on the campaign trail. He has probably been too busy dealing with more important issues like the Banghazi cover up and figuring out how much stimulus spending to request in his balanced approach to deficit reduction. New Yorkers fell for one of the oldest lies of all time, the check is in the mail.

Sad part is, if you took a survey of the people hurt right now by Sandy, I bet 60%+ of them would blame Bush. "Progressive".
