some of these guys start (keep) coming around and making plays under Spags, they may not be going anywhere.

If you read blues' threads, you will realize its a lot about the cap issues more than production. Right now, the cap number for Harper, Vilma and Smith are more than thier production. I agree that some restructured deals will have to be struck for them to stay around.

However, as I've said, I can't think of a vet we cut outright besides Jeremy Shockey. Everyone else was traded (Bush) or let go in free agency (Porter and Fujita).

Also, this is Ellis' last year of his contract. To be honest, I don't even want him around for the minimum.

Smith and Vilma aren't making any plays really. There legitimately isn't a reason to keep them around.

Ellis isn't good enough to offer a completely new contract.

These are pretty easy decisions actually. Harper really is the only questionable decision, restructure, cut, etc.

I think it depends on if we can replace him or not. I'd love to get Moore from Atlanta. Potential long term replacement and stealing him from a division rival.

I'm worried about this. Not sure anyone wants him and scared the Saints try to keep him around. I'd rather go with Hicks and Bunckley.

So torn on this. What if they restructure their deals so they are cap friendly? Also, it comes back to who can we get. It's nice to talk about signing Osi, Johnson and Avril, but other teams will be trying to sign them as well.

It will be an interesting offseason to say the least.

It's going to cost $2 to 5.5mil of cap to get rid of Smith depending on the bonuses. Anything in salary is over that. He's prolly at $1mil vet min. So $ for 3 to 6.5mil to keep and $2 to 5.5mil to walk. Current deal

Vilma $1.7mil to cut. Keep is on that. His current deal is for $4.8mil

They would still be stealing snaps from players who can actually contribute.

Not only would they be hurting the team with the cap hit, but they would be pulling us down on the field.

Vilma has actually been a boost to the defense. I don't think he'd have a problem restructuring his contract. He knows he won't get much elsewhere, and he loves it here. I like the guy as a leader as well.

Smith I am on the fence about, would like to see him restructure. Along with him, Harper absolutely has to restructure. The problem with Harper is, if we get rid of him... who is there to bring in? Pretty weak FA class for safeties going into 2013.

Sedrick Ellis is gone, this isn't even a question.

I think with our D's second year under Spags, and Drew having an even year (doesn't he statitically play better during odd years?-I could be wrong, but thought that was the case) I truly believe this team is going to take no prisoners next year. I truly believe that the 2013 team will be the best team we have ever seen

I'm with ya Coco. Smith restructuring to me depends on who we bring in. If its Avril or Johnson, then Smith can walk. If we draft a pure pass rusher like Mingo, I'd like Smith to stay another year or two to split reps.

Why? Smith's side of the field gets run all over every game. He's not getting sacks, he's not defending the run. What point is there to keep him here stealing snaps from someone who can put up sacks, or someone who can defend the run better?

I understand Smith and Vilma are leaders and great locker room guys, but their on field performance leaves a great deal to be desired.
